My nemesis is a Liquidamber (Sweet Gum) Tree. They are often said to be part of the Witch Hazel family.
They have incredibly invasive and heaving roots and subsided my place in 2018. The tree was taken down and stump ground in March 2019. (A very happy day indeed.)
The past two Augusts since then, I have had two or three suckers coming up. I drown the ends of the suckers wuth glyphosate when I see them and paint their little leaves. I read that this suckering can continue to happen for about 5 years. Until all the stored energy has been used up!
This was the Council letting it grow and grow. I have the same feelings as you do.

I have the exact same problem with bamboo from a neighbour infesting my garden. Glyphosphate is a last resort for me because the bamboo is coming up in my flower bed (as well as pushing up bricks in my pathway and puncturing through a weed membrane covered with gravel). I'm getting quotes from various landscapers to dig up the earth to 3ft deep to get the roots out and would like to know if you've come across a membrane that's actually thick enough to stop the roots?
Although my neighbour has had the plants removed, there are still roots on the border between our gardens.0
