If the bike has been designed and manufactured with the wrong screw thread on the pedal (or crank) then I would say it is clearly defective and is not fit for the purpose for which you bought it.  If I had bought it I would want a full refund, but others can explain to you your options better than I can.  The seller may have the right either to offer to repair or to replace, but as I assume all their bikes of this model will have the same inherent design flaw, a replacement won't be satisfactory, and I'd have thought a repair more expensive than simply refunding you - so I'd hold out and argue for a full refund.

I don't think it matters whether you informed them before or after six months as the fault is "designed into" the bike and must therefore be inherent.  They might be able to argue for a reduction in the refund because of the use you've had from it, but how much use could you make of it with that serious a flaw.

It is a uk seller is it, not China or somewhere?
Thanks for you’re advice.  I did accept a replacement (before I googled the company and saw that other people had similar issues) but they didn’t reply to my email, so I contacted them to say that I  had changed my mind and would like a refund instead.  They just acknowledged my email.

The company is a U.K. based company.

**update** I received an email yesterday saying that they would love to offer the replacement spare parts, but they are out of stock.  Followed by another email this morning saying that they can only provide spare parts required and that I have to pay for delivery.  They have said they are not offering a refund and that the legal team will be in touch!!

Just to make myself a little clearer, it is the arm and the left peddle that is coming off the frame, not just the pedal.  The arm does not screw onto the frame directly, it is fitted onto a spindle (?) on the frame and secured with a nut.  It is the nut that is only tightening clockwise rather than anti-clockwise.
Unless I am reading this wrong it is the complete arm that is coming of the crank (bottom bracket)
If this is a Shimano fit, tapered, the securing nut is a standard right hand thread on both sides
Once these come loose the taper in the arm wears and they are very difficult to keep secure
I have suceeded using loctite, but there are many different grades

  • Yes, it is the complete arm that is coming off.

I have now reported them to Trading Standards, so am hoping that they will be in touch at some point.

TS doe very little if anything in these sort of cases .
  • It doesn't sound faulty to me, more than likely user assembly error.  The left pedal should be a left hand thread but the crank bolt that holds the pedal arm to the bottom bracket is a conventional right hand thread on both sides.  It likely wasn't fastened tight enough to begin with.  If the crank hasn't been worn too much then a bit of loctite would do the trick, as would tightening to the specified torque.
