Possible DWP Scam Warning!

Just wanted to let people know about a number 0800 023 2635, a couple of people of people i know plus myself have received calls from this number and in my case the person claimed to be from the Jobcentre? The person wanted my National Insurance number and when i asked what this is about he said it is just some general house keeping in regard to your Universal Credit claim?
I phoned the DWP yesterday after work to ask what they wanted as i don't have a Universal Credit claim and they told me they think the call was not legit, they told me it is not one of their numbers and they would never ask personal details over the phone and so to block the call and warn others about it.
I have done some googling online and it is about 50/50 as to whether it is real or fake, but it better to be on the safe side i suppose, if you phone this number it says "you received a call today from DWP and we will call again in future"  but the genuine DWP people told me this could be just an answering machine and they have looked up my details and confirmed it was not them who called from the number.

This is a valid DWP number.

Yes, this is normal. If you ring and ask why you were called, it's highly likely the person you're speaking to in the call centre will have no idea why.
  • Ok so if this is a valid DWP number then i wonder if someone is making a Universal Credit claim using my details, I'm still not 100% about this I'm nowsammyjammy said:

Are you sure it is legit, where can i see this for myself as proof because the online reviews are dodgy to say the least.

It's the number they use when making outbound calls. Some information here. https://www.housingsystems.co.uk/COVID-19/Whats-Changed/Jobcentre-Appointments
Do you currently claim any benefits?
    I also found this.

Did you have any loans when you were claiming JSA? If you did and you owe them money then the call maybe to do with that, although we can only guess what the call was for, if it was for you because they could also have called the wrong number.

Thanks for those links, i did also notice the number on those links making it seem legit however I'm really worried now as to why they would want to talk to me about a non existent claim. My work colleague got a call from this number and they were claiming to be the Child Support Agency, he thought it was suspicious as he told the man "do you mean the Child Enforcement Agency as the name has changed" the person then hung up apparently.

The number is definitely a DWP number, I work for DWP and looked it up, I obviously cannot evidence that but I see Poppy has provided some additional info.
