Virgin Media Credit Over 8 Years Old +

Dear Readers;
I was looking for some advice; please.
I recently left Virgin Media just over 1 year ago. I received a letter within the last few days which states;
"We've recently taken a look at your old account with us and found a mistake in the amount that you owed us when you left Virgin Media".
"We're very sorry this happened, and have now recalculated your closing balance. We've attached a cheque for the amount we owe you, plus interest to cover the period since. Your credit file will be adjusted accordingly."
They included a Cheque for; £32.89.
Having called them today, (wondering that this was from the last cancellation over a year ago); it seems that they have kept this money for over 8 years. Approximately; 96 Months since my last payment.
According to their missed payment policy of approximately £5 to £10 late payment fees per month (if you miss a payment); they should owe me; approximately £960 in late payment fees.
The call handler states that it is written into the contract, that they won't pay that. However; I am sure that I did not infer within the contract that they were allowed to keep X amount of money from me without my consent for a significant amount of time.
I currently have a complaints reference number and I am waiting the 72 hours to speak to a manager.
Anyone have any luck within this area?
Sincerely;
Eternal Chi

Eternal ChiI don't quite follow. You left 8 years ago, and then came back, and then left again over a year ago. Now you've got near enough £33 back that you didn't even know they owed you in the first place until the cheque landed on your doormat. What exactly do you want "advice" on?The missed payment thing is only for the service that you pay for, there's no way you're going to get near enough a grand just because you weren't aware of a credit on the account from 2013. With all due respect if you'd monitored your account from eight years ago properly in the first place, you'd have spotted the £33 then. Consider yourself lucky they spotted it and sent you a cheque at all.

However; the advice requested is if anyone else found themselves in a similar position.
"with all due respect"; monitoring your account, in comparison to a quite sizeable company telling you how much they owe you; is not indicative of "spotting the £33" in the first place. As a customer, you have to infer that the company is billing you for the correct amount. If I told them at the time, that it was incorrect, and they said "no", there are very limited things on what a customer can do at the time.
I am not sure why I should be grateful for receiving the money that I was owed. I wouldn't consider that lucky; just normal consumer rights.0 -
Think yourself lucky, and be grateful for what you've got.
Virgin Mobile closed my account, which was a contract postpaid by direct debit, and refused to refund the credit remaining on there, which was due to a previous overcharge they'd credited back to the account.
Good riddance cuts both ways.
