Indesit washing machine /Argos issue help

I’m after a bit of advice. It’s a rather long issue tho ... so sorry in advance!
Bought my in-laws a washing machine and it was delivered 28/11/20. They called and said it wasn’t emptying/fault codes a few weeks later. Due to covid/work I was unable to go round earlier to check the fault until after Xmas. On 4th jan I spoke to Argos on the online chat, explained the item was faulty but just outside 30days. Lady said it was fine and I just need to choose another model and come back to them. Picked another model, went back on the online chat and the guy then refused to swap it and advised that it would need an engineer. Indesit Engineer turned up 11/01 and advised the unit wasn’t working properly due to it not having enough clothes in it. It’s a 10kg machine but I checked the instructions before buying and there’s a lot of programs that should work for max 5kg.
Engineer insists it must be filled to level which is approx 9kg of clothes otherwise it won’t work 🤷‍♀️

So Argos are refusing to exchange because Indesit say there is no fault with the machine. But it is clearly not fit for purpose if it advises it should work with 5kg of clothes but it doesn’t?! Any ideas?

Too light a load may trigger the out of balance sensor, so it won't go into spin cycle. Can they not just add an old towel or similar to a small load to increase the weight?
As you say, you were outside the 30 days limit to reject under CRA 2015, although they initially offered to do so. You accepted a repair attempt, so that option is no longer open.

    What were the fault codes?
Do the instructions advise what the fault codes are for?
  • I can understand that there needs to be a certain amount of clothes In the machine.. but the max 5kg programs should would with less clothes. He said that around 5+ extra towels would be needed to actually get the machine to balance 🤷‍♀️ The engineer basically said the machine is only ideal for a massive family but no where is it marketed this way.
  • Is there anything written in the instructions that states there is a minimum load for any of the cycles?

This is all the instructions mention... the out of balance mentions that you can over fill it and that it won’t work. We have also tried putting a towel in as a heavier item but still goes off balance

  • This is the instructions... states max loads but not minimum

What a grotty company Indeset are to employ engineers who spout nonsense
One program there says it's max load is  4KGs so any suggestion that it needs 9KG is absurd
I would be taking Argos to the small claims court and calling the MD of Indesit as a witness to explain the discrepancy between the Manual and the Engineers verdict
The MD will never want to show up of course bit this action  will very simply get the problem resolved.

Trying to even make a complaint to Argos ( who have been a nightmare to deal with) is so hard!!! Not even an email address to send screen shots of online chats etc.apparently I have to post all evidence

Fortunately it gets easier when you sue them. It goes straight to the legal department, when they have people with a brain, so if there is a chance that you will get a full refund. You should reject the item as not being fit for purpose as it will not wash 5Kg of clothes on 5Kg program, or 5Kg on a 10Kg program. The safety system is clearly not properly engineered, and no other washing machine has this problem in my experience.
The comments I post are my personal opinion. While I try to check everything is correct before posting, I can and do make mistakes, so always try to check official information sources before relying on my posts.
  • I don't suppose the Indesit engineer committed himself in writing that the problem was not enough washing in the machine?  If he didn't, I'd tell them I want them to look at the problem again - unless Indesit are adamant that not enough washing in the machine can be a recognised problem - in which case their advertising ought to make that "feature" very clear.

Just one thing - I can perfectly well imagine that a washing m/c might not function properly if the load is under an optimum weight, but what weight of washing are your in-laws putting in the m/c?  I know the max. load is 10kg, but 10kg of washing is an awful lot of clothes*.  Are you sure they are putting enough in even for the 4 and 5kg programmes?

*I weighed a load once out of curiosity and was amazed at how little a load that seemed to fill the drum actually weighed.  If your in-laws live on their own, a 10kg m/c may be overspecced for them.  But I'd still be complaining if Indesit say the problem is the load isn't heavy enough.
