Chromebook newbie question

Options
My dear wife has just got herself an HP Chromebook with which she is dead chuffed - apart from one issue.  Every time she starts it, she has to enter her password to continue, despite her not signing out when she shuts it down.  Is there a way of setting it up so that you just open it up and off you go, in the same way you can with a Windoze laptop?

If she has an Android phone she should be able to unlock the Chromebook with it, if it has a fingerprint sensor its instant.

Thanks.  She does have an Android phone with fingerprint sensor but what a way to start working on a laptop!  Is there really no way of changing any setting on the Chromebook?

When you start your Chromebook you are effectively logging into your Google account so should be password protected.

Ah.  We hadn't realised that.  So you can't even start it with a PIN instead?

Using a PIN code is my recommendation then you still get the security benefits without having to type a long password (I hope it is a long password!).

Here is a link with instruction to set up a PIN code:

I hope you haven't got any Windows laptops set to start up without a password, if you do, please change it now, you can also use a PIN code instead for ease. This is so important for security reasons, if your laptop is ever lost or stolen you will be kicking yourself for not securing it with a password or PIN.
  • I too find it frustrating that every time I want to use the Chromebook, its a case of **** then return to get in.

You don't if you just keep it logged in/sleeping when not in use, unless you have got the setting where it displays the lock screen when waking up. The battery lasts an age anyway so we've never found this to be an issue.

Maybe not on yours, but you do on ours.  Wonder what the difference is ...

  • If you are starting your chromebook up after switching it off/running the battery flat, then you have to log in. If you simply close the lid I.e. the laptop is sleeping, when you open it up you don’t have to log in. If you open settings and type ‘lock’ in the search, it will take you straight to the option whereby you can toggle off the setting- show Lock Screen when waking from sleep. We have always had this turned off.

There isn’t any difference between our chromebooks as they are all running the same os.

Having following instructions, I'm still no nearer being able to access my chromebook without typing in password.
When I've finished with chromebook, I press the TOP RIGHT key on keyboard, the screen goes white and shuts down.

When I open the lid later, I'm presented with the request to enter password or digits, hit return and wait.......... IS THIS CORRECT ?

I don't favour closing pages/websites and simply shutting lid, but IS THAT RIGHT ?
