Not really.

Physical cheques are rarely checked manually when being processed, so it'll almost always end up being on the person/company writing the cheque to notice any anomalies (which is likely why it took a while for this to get noticed.)  The bank would have no idea how much the drawer intended the cheque to be for unless they're employing mind-readers.

I see no reason why the app process would be any different.
