Lloyd’s Bank - Cheque Fraud - CIFAS Marker

Hi,
No excuses, just the truth.
I recently received a check for £80, I was in a bad financial situation due to losing my job thanks for the current pandemic. I do not claim any benefits.
I amended the cheque to show £480 and I cashed in via the mobile banking app.
A few months later, I received a TEXT from Lloyd’s saying my account was closed after 20 years of holding it.
I called them and they explained why and there was no point in arguing and that was that.
I know what I did was wrong and I deeply regret it but does anyone have any advice on how to get the marker removed or how to make amends with Lloyd’s? Can a solicitor help with the matter?
Please don’t judge, I don’t wish my financial position or anyone.
Thank you for your help in advance.

  • No solicitor will be able to overturn the marker or make Lloyds give you another account.

You'll need to see if you can open a basic account elsewhere. If you have other accounts elsewhere, you may find those are also closed.
  • I'd leave it well alone.  You're lucky you only got a CIFAS marker.

You cannot get the marker removed, nor can you make Lloyds give you another account, anyone that says they can, for a fee, is trying to scam you.
Your actually very lucky this is the extent of the punishment, it could have been a fine, or even prison time.

'I do not claim any benefits'. If you are entitled to them, why not? Better to live on benefits than resort to fraud.

You knowingly committed fraud, yet you want to know if the fraud marker can be removed ??????  I can scarcely believe you're even asking the question.
As others have said, you should thank your lucky stars that you weren't slapped with a substantial fine.  Or even that you're not right at this moment attempting to fend off the unwanted advances from Mr Big in your cosy prison cell.
  • The fraud marker is a factual representation of the events that occurred.

It stays on your CIFAS record for six years.

    Nothing will change that.

You'll also find it nigh on impossible to open even a basic account elsewhere, but someone might be sympathetic.

Avoid Lloyds banking group (this includes Halifax and Bank of Scotland), and avoid RBS Group (this includes Natwest).

  • Had the same from Lloyds, I didn’t fraud a cheque myself but someone else did and as i was unknowingly involved as it was my account i have suffered. Luckily i had another account to use and didn’t find out until after 4 years. I have since opened a Monzo personal and joint, phone contract and car lease. I haven’t managed to get what i want yet... a mortgage but this should off in a few months. Just wanted to give you hope that it is a f’d situation but not the end of the world or life.

Like others have said cifas won’t remove marker.
  • Monzo is a possibility but, youre going to struggle.
I wouldnt even entertain any of the high street banks, in your situation.
Good luck, I hope you find somwhere that will give you an account.

Unfortunately if you openly commit fraud you have to take the consequences on the chin.

How did you amend the cheque to show £480 instead of £80. Usually they are typed if from a company. Im more impressed that you managed to do that. Cnat belive the banks only picked it up after a few months and that it actually went through the mobile app. Very concerning lack of security here
