New washing machine, seems to be near silent, is this normal? Also toilet seat query.

Got a new washing machine and connected up the hose to cold water connection under sink, made sure it was on, let it do its first wash empty as it says in manual, noticed it spun quietly but no sound of water. about a minute later I heard a few spluttering sounds then what sounded like water going through and I could see it going in and not at a trickle but not pouring in either.
Maybe I am just used to older machines as my last one was about 15 years old and it was quieter than a friends 4 year old one.
Toilet seat is more the edges at front have a few scuffs on it, but at back and front its become discoloured with age (at least 4 years old when I moved here) still works ok but I normally wipe it with a cloth after I use it as it looks discoloured even then it still looks a bit, sort of like very faint nicotine colouring (I don't smoke)
I would just buy a new one but its social housing so the seat is smaller than usual/non standard.

Pause it in the middle of washing cycle and open the door. There has to be visible water inside. The seat - what is it made of?1

I think its working fine, I heard it drain a few times and fill a few times since and im guessing since its a empty load its not using much water, I did notice its rattling loud when spinning fast so im guessing just needs the legs adjusted.

It's possible, that it's other sort of silence, you just don't realise this.Machines with 'direct drive' are much more silent than traditional ones. You can hear the motor sound only when spinning at high speed.3

You can get toilet seats of all sizes. Have a look on Screwfix to see if any will fit.2

Modern machines tend to weigh the load and adjust the amount of water to suit, so an empty load won't use much water. Fundamentally, the less water used, the less water that requires heating and therefore reduced power usage.3

If you do some googling, guidance on measuring your toilet seat is readily available - which will help you get a well fitting replacement seat.2

You could try a mild abrasive cleaner like Jif on the toilet seat. If there's a discoloured area on the underside, test that first.

Not unless he's got a 20 year old bottle hanging around or prefers to use lemon juice instead 😁Jeepers_Creepers said:You could try a mild abrasive cleaner like Jif on the toilet seat. If there's a discoloured area on the underside, test that first.
It's been CIF for 2 decades now.1 -
the magic eraser sponges also work well on discoloured toilet seats. Don't use them too often though as they are mildly abrasive1

Thanks, the edge of the toilet seat has some tiny pin size like holes on it, I have a feeling thats when I put bleach down once. I have some cream cleaner left from cleaning the bath a few weeks ago im guessing that will work.
