Transferring from Cash ISA account to a new Stocks & Shares ISA account

Unfortunately, Vanguard doesn't ask what type of ISA you are transferring from.masonic said:Are you sure you've got cash ISA selected as the type of ISA you wish to transfer? Some providers do not accept partial transfers of other S&S ISAs, but do accept partial transfers from cash ISAs.
I did a dummy transfer to see what the problem was (I.e. I aborted instead of pressing the final submit button). I tried all 3 options and they all had the same basic flaw. I'll describe what happened when I selected option 2 for a past-year transfer.
Enter existing provider: I chose Nationwide building society.
Account number: I entered a valid NWBS account number.
When did you contribute to your ISA?: I chose Previous tax years.
Is this a full or a partial ISA transfer?: I chose Partial.
It then says "Please indicate the approximate value of the Vanguard investments you are transferring"
This is clearly an error on Vanguard's part as it won't let you continue unless you enter a non-zero value. However, if you enter the partial value that you wish to transfer from your cash ISA it looks like it would work. I entered £1000 and hit the "Next" button and it loaded a confirmation page with "Total value of ISA being transferred = £1,000" and the correct account details. I abandoned at this point but it looked like it would do the right thing if I proceeded.
Hard to believe that such a major provider could have such a cuneiform process.2 -
For your information, I contacted Vanguard about partial ISA transfer and this is the response:
Please note we are unable to facilitate partial transfers via Cash ISA's. We have the below options from which we can facilitate:
1. Full transfer of all current tax year contributions (2020/21)
2. Full transfer of all previous tax years contributions (everything before 2020/21)
3. Full transfer of all current tax year contributions (2020/21) and all previous tax years contributions (everything before 2020/21)
Thus if you wanted to transfer across a Previous years ISA, it would need to be everything that you have contributed in Previous years, we'd be unable to facilitate any specified amount.
Apparently Vanguard doesn't allow partial Cash ISA transfers...1 -
This still doesn't actually prevent you from transferring some of a cash ISA into Vanguard but just means that you need to insert an additional couple of steps - you can open another cash ISA, transfer your desired partial amount from your old one into this, and then transfer this new cash ISA to Vanguard in its entirety.Alexis91 said:For your information, I contacted Vanguard about partial ISA transfer and this is the response:
