@burnie1874 Just tell the SoLR (yet to be announced) of your new address a few days before the move then send the closing readings on the day you move out.  Take a photo for your records.  Tell GNE of your new address if the website or phone numbers still work.  Similarly, download all your bills from GNE and keep them safely.
Leave a note for the new owner with the same readings and tell them that GNE went bust and that the SoLR will initially be their supplier.
Take meter readings at the new property and register with the incumbent supplier(s).  Then consider switching, starting with Citizens Advice and 'Which? Switch'.
  • Hi. I got smart meters fitted in Dec  but elec meter has never sent data to
GNE or my home display unit. Engineer from Magnum Utilities( they installed meters) was due to come and fix 2nd Mar. They have now cancelled visit due to GNE  ceasing trading. Who will be responsible for fixing meter fault now? Original installers or someone appointed by my eventual supplier?

Your new supplier (initially the SoLR)  will takeover responsibility for your smart meters. The responsibility always transfers on switch of supply.

The way things are going we will be left with the big six.

Some of us have never left the big six...
  • This is the risk we have to take though.
We take the risk to save the most money by going for the smaller and cheapest companies.  In doing so this has the increased risk of the company not being sustainable.  For me personally, this is the risk I am willing to take.  The small amount of inconvenience is worth the hundreds (or thousands) of pounds I have saved over the years.

My direct debit is due on 1st. Should I cancel the direct debit, I don’t want to be out of pocket!

Yes, you should cancel it if you feel worried about it. Protect your bank account, too many elderly people don't cancel their DD and get robbed.

It would be better if you could simply stop the 1 February payment, not canceling the DDM as at some future date you are likely to have a final bill to pay (you imply a credit balance seems unlikely), check with your bank if that's possible. At the end of the day, do what you feel most comfortable with.

I am joining GNE (gas only) on february 3rd & decided to let the first direct debit go through to cover my gas usage until I am transferred away from them
I suspect the (monthly) amount taken should be about correct since I will almost certainly be with GNE for around month
The other reason for not cancelling the DD is that I do not want to fall foul of possible penalties for doing so eg from experience I know EON change you to a more expensive tariff if you cancel the DD
However I will probably cancel the 2nd direct debit assuming my transfer away from GNE is well under way by then
