'Fairly low budget' does not really give us much to go on. Screen size would also help.
I've recently bought a Pixel 4a, because I specifically wanted a smaller screen and budget under £350.
No free lunch, and no free laptop ;)
  • Which ever one is not made in China

That rules out those fruity phones then!

How do you find the battery life on it? It's the one thing that puts me off it. That said, still happy with my Sony ZX1 Compact and don't plan to change until the battery starts to fail on it. I easily get a couple of days use, and dread the thought of going from a proper small screen to the current 'small' screen (my Sony is 4.6" compared to Pixel's 5.8").

Battery life is fine. I charge every night anyway, and don't think I've ever got it to much under 30% left.
Bear in mind that the screen size is not the bezel size: modern smartphones have slimmer bezels, so going up in screen size does not mean that the whole thing is bigger.
My last phone was a Huawei P8 Lite, and that was actually slightly bigger than the 4a, though with a smaller screen.
It fits easily into a pocket, and i can operate it easily in one hand.
There's really not a lot of options, unless you want to pay £400 and up for an iPhone SE with a 4.7" screen.
