I also wonder just how smile would be aware that you used an account aggregator anyway, unless you told them.

Perhaps someone technically in the know might explain how FD for example can enable you to log in to smile without some sort of co-operation from the latter. Certainly, when smile changed their log in process a few weeks ago, the FD aggregator worked fine the following day, having been upgraded seemlessly to handle the change.

They don't need co-operation from the banks because they reverse-engineer their aggregator to work with the appropriate internet banking site. What's happening is their servers are pulling the login pages, filling out your login details and then using their servers to log into your online banking site behind the scenes. I'd imagine their servers are capable of interpreting and adapting to new login forms to some extent, but it's very easy for them flag up changes to the login pages and manually update their systems when they change.

Smile would be aware of this happening because they'd see the connection coming from FD's servers, which are likely to be known to them.
  • i used the FD one for a while and its smart... you can (or could?) pull in the balance on nearly every account you have, not just banks. I have POwergen, BT and a load balance.

You could also set up "Assetts" etc to give you a Net Worth picture. All very nifty, but i stopped using it on the basis that, encrypted or not, you are storing your passwords in writen or electronic form which i think is against many T&Cs of banks...

Spreadsheets do the job just fine and only take a minute or two to update / track every few days / each week.
  • I've used Egg Manager for years and wouldn't be without it. Slows down a bit if you've got lots of external accounts but saves all that logging in to individual banks. And it does your credit cards too. And I've only got a pound in my actual Egg savings account.
  • I spoke to Egg MM about revealing passwords etc....they will put your mind at rest...passwords are encrypted and Egg can't find them out. Also, staff at other banks will try to dissuade you from using Egg but only out of ignorance. Those banks T&Cs do not actually state that using Egg MM is a breach.

Yes, but banks T&Cs don't generally offer you any protection if your account is subject to fraud. The Banking Code does that, and it states very clearly:
12.13 If you use an account aggregation service, you may be liable for any fraud or mistakes that happen on your account as a result.

Which is probably why Egg offer their own 'Egg Guarantee' to cover any potential cases of fraud

Indeed they do, as I said in post #10. I also said...

The real problem arises if you're a victim of fraud that isn't associated with an aggregator, but the bank still claims you have been negligent with your security information because you have been using the service. Under those circumstances you might have real difficulty getting the money back.

The issue here is that your bank and Egg might both claim the other is liable, leaving you with a fight on your hands and no guarantee that either may be forced to pay out in the end.

The Egg guarantee doesn't look much good to me. I put a token dormant account a couple of years ago for the free tenner but daren't use it properly.

Currently using spreadsheet and diligence to track my balances over a few accounts, but this sounds like a step forward. Have had an Egg account for years but always been suspicious of this in the past.

Personally I use a dedicated finance program rather than a spreadsheet; I've been using abp (a banking program) by Malcolm Bryant ever since my Psion days. It can import statement downloads from internet banking sites and reconcile them against the records made as you go along (which is easy to do as it's on my phone so always with me), can track investments and, best of all, is free. When I upgrade to the new communicator I'm going to have to move to JabpLite, which is a Java version for more modern phones.

Call me extra suspicious but hovering over your links suggests the same webpage. Googled abp....nothing. I'm curious but too suspicious to look. How can you reassure me and the likes?

edit: Googled jabplite though and it came up.
