Handled  suggest a drop  shipping service
(Your order is handled by...” and includes the name of the UK company based in Surrey. )

I bought from the USA last year but shipped from a large drop ship depot in the UK .

Yes that was my thinking of what is meant by handled by.

It happens, and unless they specifically state goods are being shipped from the UK, you can't assume they are.
Agreed - in fact, Apple have at least one UK stock partner (Syncreon).  Last year I ordered the new iphone and a macbook.  Same process etc, both arrived via DHL, but the iphone had been shipped by apple to Syncreon, and then my order was dealt with as direct from Syncreon's warehouse in UK.  The macbook mean time, came from China - albeit as DHL, they bulk ship from China to the Netherlands I think, and then the individual orders are shipped from there.
I suspect Brexit will make this years Apple launch more interesting for UK buyers.

I ordered on a mobile devices as a link from Facebook. It took me to:

    www.suunto.com/en-gb

I’m fully aware that this is a Finnish brand but as everything suggested I was purchasing from the uk site, and it was being “handled” by the uk company based in Frimley.

In addition I was attracted by the “free shipping over £75” that is still showing on the site now. This I believe is misleading if you are then going to be charged by the likes of UPS when you finally receive the goods.

If you go to the site now you get a popup stating about Brexit and that it will take longer for delivery because of customs... which means its not coming from inside the UK... presumably that popup wasnt there when you ordered?

If you look in the FAQ it also states:

    From where are orders dispatched?

All orders are dispatched from our factory based in Vantaa, Finland.

If the goods are under £135 then the retailer should be collecting VAT at the point of sale and the goods enter the UK without any additional charges.

Regarding information, the EU directive on Unfair Commercial Practices contains a pretty comprehensive list of actions that may be considered misleading should they alter the economic activity of the average consumer.

The website details Finnish law applies and it could be argued not expressly stating where goods are shipped from if they come from a territory other than where the goods have been marketed to the consumer then failing to expressly define this to the consumer could be misleading.

As the EU was able to ensure all websites have cookie warnings you'd think they'd be able to ensure all websites have clearer data about where goods are shipped from and what law governs the sale as it is obviously an important aspect for the consumer and we have generally moved on from having to read the small print to find essential information.

The terms for sales on the website appear to be these:
    https://www.suunto.com/en-gb/Support/Suunto-Webshop/Sales-Terms-and-Conditions/
which states you are dealing with a UK company (Amer Sports UK Limited).

But they state its shipped from Finland... a UK company doesnt have to ship from the UK

The OP stated they bought it before NYE and therefore the new HMRC rules were not in place at that time.

Its also very clear in the FAQ that the items come from Finland

Why?  I would only assume "shipping" is the cost of actually delivering the goods, never any customs duties or VAT that might get added, not the couriers handling fee for dealing with customs.

You're free to make your own assumptions, but you shouldn't get upset when they're wrong.

Perhaps you would think that but it's very rare I've seen an EU/UK  website ever expressly state where its goods are located, at least any clearer than this website does. Given we've yet to see any precedent on this I'm guessing it's a non-starter.
