Why can BT offer a better speed than Sky?

Im interested in Switching to Sky Broadband. We already have Sky TV with sports so i was interested in switching to Sky's mid package.
We only use the net for general browsing, shopping and the odd download (maybe once a month)
We are currently on Skys option 2 which is costing us £22.99 a month, switching to Sky would save us around £200 in a year.
I tried to phone Sky and the guy i spoke to (not english) couldnt understand what i was asking. After 15 minutes i gave up.
I usually get between 2mb and 3mb download speed - which is fine for me. But sky say they can only offer 0.5mb?
Im obviously the same distance from the exchange (about 2.8miles) and its the same phone line etc.
So why such a large difference. A friend around the corner from me (less than half a mile away - further from the exchange) is getting a speed of 7mb from Sky?!
So im confused as to why mine would be so low? Ok my phone line may not be as good as my friends but BT can manage 3mb with it?!
Am i missing something or should i phone back?

I really wouldn't bother with SKY - They are terrible. I just cancelled my subs after I had been with them for 2 years, and the woman I spoke to said as I had been such a long term customer they were prepared to offer me a cheaper deal - I said to her that I had only been with them for 2 years and she said that was long for SKY !!!!
My friend was with bb on sky and cancelled after a while as the service was attrocious0 -

I guess you get good and bad with everyone. My friends are with them and have nothing but good things to say about them
Mind you i have had shocking service from BT. I had no Internet connection at all once so i phoned them up to find out what was going on and there response was "give it a few days and see if it comes back"...oh ok then! Good job i didnt rely on it for work or anything!0 -

See if Sky have LLU (their own equipment) at your exchange here. Blue text on this forum usually signifies hyperlinks, so click on them!..:wall:0 -

You should definitely get more than 0.5MB then. Blue text on this forum usually signifies hyperlinks, so click on them!..:wall:0 -
If you already subscribe to sky then for the price you cannot really beat their broadband deals. Personally I've had no problems with their support - they recently changed to a 'more secure' e-mail setup which caused a few problems but their technical support were very helpful, were UK based and got me sorted with one call. I only have them as back-up for my main Virgin cable account & speed-wise they are just as fast.0
