MOT tests - another extension during lockdown?

Having lost several members of my family to Covid over the last 12 months I’m particularly conscious of the risks of this disease.

During the first lockdown the requirement to get your car MOTd was suspended for six months but sadly not this time. I consider this an unnecessary risk and with this in mind I’ve started a Government petition asking for a similar extension. It went live a couple of hours ago.

Could I ask forum members to take a minute to read my petition and should you agree with it, sign and if possible share it. If you’re not in agreement that’s fine - thanks for looking.

It's probably safer to SORN your car if you're worried about risk. Every time you drive out there is a risk of accident or breakdown so it would be better to keep the car at home until the lockdown ends. As a moneysaving site it will also save you the cost of VED and petrol.
Remember the saying: if it looks too good to be true it almost certainly is.

What's the risk of more unroadworthy cars causing unnecessary accidents/deaths if the MoT extension is extended any further?
Nothing is risk-free, but I don't really see why an MoT test is particularly risky if the tester wears suitable PPE and vehicle interior is wiped down inside.

If you're that worried, why do you need your car? I presume you're self-isolating and getting your shopping delivered? SORN it.

Garages have had a year to sort out their cleansing routines and precautions. Honestly, the risk from getting your car MOTd is far lower than the risk to other road users from perennial MOT extensions. At least the last of last time's extensions have expired now, so there's no risk of cars going two years between tests.

Good suggestion if he has a private drive or somewhere else private to keep the car.

Tricky if he has to park on the road.
A man walked into a car showroom.
He said to the salesman, “My wife would like to talk to you about the Volkswagen Golf in the showroom window.”
Salesman said, “We haven't got a Volkswagen Golf in the showroom window.”
The man replied, “You have now mate".

The reason  MOT tests were given a 6 month extension was because a lot of garages were only doing work for key workers or some were shut during the lockdown, it was nothing to do with risk. If you are using your car then presumably you going out to shop or on essential business and there's is no more risk than dropping your car off at a garage for an MOT. If you're not using your car then take it off the road and SORN it.

    Sorry for your loss btw.

You could arrange for a garage to collect it and MOT it, then just leave the car unused for 3-7 days to quarantine, or if it's a big garage they may be happy to leave it there to quarantine. Drive it home with the windows open.
Garages are pretty conscientious though and will take all the appropriate precautions (mine came back with covers on the wheel and gear lever, as well as having a spray down.

Which is exactly what my dad's local VW dealership is going to do tomorrow, and when I say local it's actually 20 miles away and they're still prepared to collect and return it.
  • I am not in favour of extension because road safety is also very important to save human lives. I hope you also understand its significance.
