Ten months in a bungalow has suddenly become six months in a 1 bed flat?As you say 'That doesn’t not add up' !Without having the info that's been requested, it's not possible to offer any meaningful advice.2

OK, lets see if I understand this.
Your mum had an account for gas and electric until you took over the account on March 2020 and at that stage the account was in credit. It seems that the supplier is confused about the Gas supply, in saying that they couldn't connect to the meter (even though it's not a Gas Smart Meter). When asked, last week, you gave them a reading of 2400 (cu meters). You have raised a complaint.
So, some questions. Do you have any old bills? What do they say about Gas readings - firstly for the period your mum was there and thereafter? Did she or you ever supply Gas meter readings? If not, presumably the Gas part of the bills all mention estimated readings? If they do show all estimated readings, then you having supplied a reading of 2400 last week should result in a new, more accurate bill being produced - if not automatically, then as a result of your complaint. Here I'm confused when you say "(she was disabled and had meter readings)". So your mum did supply gas meter readings but you didn't realise that you needed to? Old bills will clarify this. If you don't have paper ones, perhaps there is an account you can log into to see the historic bills.
As for the question of who is at fault and do you have to pay - perhaps you could come back to this thread when you receive a response to your complaint and/or a fresh bill.
Let me know if I've got any of this wrong.0 -
The meter would have read 0000 when it was put in 3 years ago ; 2400 now and means 800 m3 a year, that's 9000 kWh a year which will cost about £300.
You really do need some historic accurate data.

Sorry. It was a 1 bed bungalow not flat. Typo.JohnB47. Yeah. That’s all right. There are a lot of historical bills and this is where I’m lost tbh. The bills are all for gas and electric every time as it’s a combined energy contract. The gas bills are very strange though. They never show a reading. Not even an estimate until I took over in March and then it’s just estimated at zero.I did supply a reading in Mar. You have to I thought to change contract to a new payee. But it seems that reading does not appear anywhere.I know I should not have paid for estimates. And I know I should have checked the bills. I get all that now. But my issue is that I’m facing a huge bill for what seems to be a complete mess ie I did supply a reading; the bills don’t have any readings on them and the usage is estimated at zero. I know NONE of this makes sense. If I was reading it I’d be thinking I was an idiot. But these are the facts and it’s confusing.I’ll await the bill and see what happens. I just wanted advise on the sort of things to raise with them. I still don’t understand why the very first call to me said “we are struggling to connect to your gas smart meter” when they have now confirmed there isn’t one. I have a suspicion that the issue is they THOUGHT there was a smart meter and that’s why it’s been estimating zero all this time. The disability comment was if a person is disabled, how are meter readings obtained? Presumably they come out? They can’t just keep estimating. My mum was given the impression that was the point of the smart meter.0

When did you Mum change supplier ?
Does the bill show a standing charge for gas ?

Few things need clarifying here. Seeing as this is your house when did you buy it. Did your mother live there since you bought it and now you've moved in since she passed away or did you buy it and have it for a period and then your mum moved in.
Still a bit confused about the "smart meter" comments. Do you or do you not have smart meters? Surely you'd remember if you had them fitted or not? If unsure send pictures of your actual meters (with background so we can see what is connected to it on here and we can advise)
Did your mum ever read the meter? When was the last "actual" meter reading. If you have all your bills, put them in chronological order then look carefully at them. Its unlikely that the readings "don't appear" on your bill.
The difficulty is your reading is now 2400, so somebody has to pay it. You mum has obviously been using the gas when she was there. Given she was disabled, was no one else keeping an eye on things?
Think you need to provide some bills and pictures of your meter on here for people to help. Otherwise it's all just conjecture.
I don't know if its possible, someone else more qualified can comment, but did you just transfer the name of the contract from your mum to you or did you close and start a new contract? Potentially if a new contract you might be able to state 2400 was your opening reading and you are not liable for previous use as it was someone else (even though your relative) and then they would have to chase the payment from her estate or write it off as she has now passed away. I'm not sure if this is viable though.0 -
OP
Can you post photos of earliest and latest Bill's you have with personal details redacted.
And also a photo of meter with readingThe world is not ruined by the wickedness of the wicked, but by the weakness of the good. Napoleon0
