VOIP on an Openreach exchange line.

Sky got me to agree to providing my telephone service over VOIP (Internet phone is their jargon).
Bad mistake.  When their router fails the phone also fails so you cannot ring their free customer service numbers to complain.
Presumably it is cheaper for them but I can see no advantage to the customer in providing the telephone service over VOIP.
Just say no.

Well IP telephony is the future, like it or not. A number of legacy services including ISDN and analogue telephony are being withdrawn so in the not too distant, there will be no other choice. Why does the router fail?

If you live where I do then power cuts are fairly frequent which stops the router. This is a bit of  pain when it reboots and everything else has to get logged back in.
There's a definite requirement for a 12v battery back-up facility to maintain router functionality (our FTTP ONT has a battery back-up but it's of no use when the router goes down)

Breaking news - when broadband fails, so does VoIP, in other news when the broadband fails you can't get online. Simply not good enough.
