Connecting soundbar to tv

Afternoon All,
Bought a JVC tv last weekend set up with a little fiddling, instructions aren't the best. I have a 4-5 year old soundbar that worked well with my old Toshiba but can't get the soundbar to work well with the new tv eventhough the soundbar is also jvc. There are no obvious connections for sound input to tv, I did manage to connect the headphone to the soundbar aux socket which worked but the sound quality was terrible. There is a bluetooth connection which pairs but won't actually transmit any sound just wondered if anyone had any ideas or experiences or ways around this though it could be a need to buy special cables potentially.

I take it you are connecting the optical cable? If it doesn't work connect via the Aux out or try another optical cable.
Does the TV settings need to have the sound source set?
That'll keep you busy for 5 minutes.... ;)

    Hi,
    is this any help?
Thanks, that was the set up on the last TV we had but there's no equivalent socket on the new one which is a bit annoying. I had a ranty ten minutes when connecting up to our BT box with the new tv not working at all before I found out that I had to connect into HDMI port 1 and not 2,3 or 4.

There's no optical cable input on the tv that will connect up with a normal headphone type socket. I've connected from optical and aux out on the soundbar to Av as the only suitable connection on the TV with no sound. TV is set to external audio. Bluetooth is pairing and showing as connected on both but with no sound out of soundbar. TV sound is obviously working and to be fair is a lot better than the old model but getting the soundbar working would be nice, first world problem at the end of the day

Is it me or are you really doing everything backwards? You want an output on the tv and an input on the soundbar.
Tall, dark & handsome. Well two out of three ain't bad.
  • Don't know could be me could be you. For the avoidance of doubt there is no optical cable input or output that uses a 'normal' 2.5mm cable.

According to the specs of both there is an optical connection on both.
    TV....

    Soundbar.....
Beef up the sound from your Blu-ray player and TV with the JVC 2.0 Sound Bar
Whether you’re watching TV shows, getting absorbed in a movie, taking in a widescreen documentary or playing your favourite video games, great sound makes everything better
Behind its metal speaker grille, the JVC 2.0 Sound Bar features two 50 W drivers that deliver 100 W of combined audio power, adding depth and clarity to your entertainment. Essential preset sound modes let you select an option to best suit what you’re viewing – choose between Movie, TV, Sport and DEF
Bluetooth allows you to stream music and audio content direct from your mobile phone or tablet to the Sound Bar, so you can listen to songs in high quality over its larger speakers
Use the optical port to connect it to compatible TVs and AV equipment. There’s a coaxial input for added flexibility, such as when you need to connect to aerial-type cables. An LCD display lets you clearly see which inputs have been selected and which settings are in operation, so you can make changes without hassle

    Or, am I missing something?

  • Thanks had another look and there is an optical port on the soundbar, it's protected by a cover so hadn't noticed or used before. Have used the coaxial connection previously using a 2.5mm jack connection, will try and get a double male optical cable and see if that works.
