  • Hello All,

Thank you all for your advice. no one had access to property around the August / September time and no new appliance in the house or anything.  I have turned all fuses off at the box and the meter does not continue to run? myself, bulb, electricians and everyone else are stumped by it and essentially bulb are still enforcing the debt.

Bulb sent an engineer out to fit a second meter for a 2 week period to see if the numbers matched and they did?

below is a list of all meter readings since moving into the property.  Upon Joining bulb i was placed onto the Priority Services Register which meant that Bulb were to visit and take the meter readings for me, however looking at it I can see that they have been using estimates rather than actual readings.  - I will be taking everyone advice on the checking meter readings hourly & daily to see if any trends occur

So you don't even get to see the dial spinning around, or have the opportunity to get the meter changed by switching to a smart meter!
My thinking was (a) switch to smart meter, so (b) if consumption reduces dramatically, it would provide evidence of a faulty meter (despite what their engineer said).
The Elster AS300P is a smart meter.
Aren't smart meters wonderful?  No more estimated bills and all that...
if  it is a smart meter where can I see the pounds and pence display and how come they would use estimates? i have no idea about any of this - thank you
  • Just checking my maths as they seem inconsistent with OP and other posters.

    42918 on 2020-10-05 (actual read)
    51988 on 2021-01-22 (actual read)

9070 KWh over 111 days (inclusive)
81.71 KWh per day (£10.64 a day at 13.03 pence per KWh)
3.41 KWh per hour (£0.44 an hour)

Again try turning off all the circuits at the distribution board for an hour and see if the meter stops increasing. Turn circuits back on, one at a time.

Is there an immersion heater in the property?
Have the neighbours tapped a circuit for a hydroponics setup?
A dream is not reality, but who's to say which is which?

Those ‘customer’ readings show 13000 in  8 months
  • I think the best advice on this thread is the circuit on/off suggestion.

If OP can identify the circuit that is causing the spike, it should identify the area within the house where the greedy appliance/s are.

Then it is a case of testing each appliance.

The post about someone tapping in for a hydroponic set-up had also crossed my mind, hence why I asked about other visitors/work at the property.

Might be worth downloading the historical readings via https://data.n3rgy.com/consumer/home
Haven't used it myself (no smart meter !) but no doubt another forumite can advise.
It’s a SMETS1 meter going by the serial number which Bulb may not be able to read. N3rgy.com will only show data for SMETS2 meters,  or SMETS1 meters that have been enrolled and adopted by the DCC.
  • Is this an all electric property?
If so, how are you heating your home? Electric showers? What about a dishwasher or tumble dryer? All these appliances are energy hungry
Be happy, it's the greatest wealth :)

    1)  How is this house heated - All electric rads, underfloor heating ?
    2) Switch off everything in the Consumer Unit, then switch one thing on at a time and check the meter advance

Have a look at the light marked 4000 Imp/kWh.  4000 flashes and you've used 1kWh, so you can see at a glance how much is being used at any moment.  This is quicker than watching the meter reading increase.
For example, if you plugged in a 3kW kettle (and absolutely nothing else) it would flash 12,000 times an hour or 3.33 times per second.

Might be worth getting a second opinion on consumption by using an energy monitor.
It's critically important to get one with a clip that snaps around the output cable, so that it's independent of the meter rather than one that monitors the flashing light on the meter and would be fooled by an inaccurate meter.
