How to read gas meter!

I had my meters updated to smart ones a few months ago (Smet2) and Avro now assure me I still need to read them as they are unable to (and yes I have pointed out to them that this renders them absolutely no different to the old non smart ones, the only reason for them as far as I am concerned is so I don’t have to read them every month!). Anyway, I have no idea how to read the gas meter,
literally every time you press the button (it’s a blank screen until you hit one of the buttons) it comes up with a different number.  None of the options say ‘meter read’ or ‘grand total’ or anything that is obviously the right number to give to Avro.  I attach a photo - can anyone help?

That looks like the electricity meter, not the gas meter !

On the electricity meter look for the letters 'kwh' on the display. On the gas meter look for the characters 'm3' on the display. The reading is the numbers to the left of the decimal point (if there is one)
  • All the information that you need is in this guide
    https://octopus.energy/blog/how-to-read-your-meter/#smets2meter

    For the G470 gas meter
To read your gas meter, press either 'A' or 'B' to wake up the screen. This should automatically come up with your gas reading.
  • Your photo is definitely of the electricity meter. This is a photo of my gas meter supplied by Avro a month or so ago.  I had exactly the same problem as you, Avro could not take an automatic reading so asked me to provide one.  I couldn't because my remote readout wasn't working.  An engineer came out yesterday to try and fix the problem (he couldn't) so I asked him how to read the meter.  He told me to press button A to get the reading, pressing button A a second time shows a credit screen, presumably for pre-payment meters.  It seems to totally defeat the object of a smart meter if my remote readout can't communicate with the meter and the energy company can't take automatic meter readings.

@Jolly - you are correct. Ofgem has strong-armed all suppliers to become DCC Users (some have been fined by Ofgem for not doing so). They also have to meet SMETS2 meters agreed roll out targets (or be fined for not doing so). That said, to get information from your smart meters, suppliers need to develop or pay for a third-party Adaptor (a piece of sophisticated secure software) that talks to the DCC - the central hub for all SMETS2 meters. This Adaptor has then to link into the supplier's billing systems. When I last asked Ofgem to comment on a supplier that was in the same situation as Avro , all I got back was 'some suppliers have ongoing operational problems'. The Ofgem focus is based on meter numbers not whether they are smart or not.

Apologies, it was my electric meter I'm having the problem with, not gas! (I always take photos of meter readings as my meters are both outside) I've just been out in the wind and rain and taken both, gas I think is fine, it says meter index like in the prior posters pic. The electric meter looks like thisis this right reading? If it is, that's a phenomenal amount of electricity for me to have used in one month  :o
  • Hi,
you wont have used that in one month, you need to subtract the previous reading from 00477.

Why. You have had the meter for a few months.  477KwHours is not a huge amount for a few months over winter. Assuming it started at Zero.

I live on my own and don't use a lot of either gas or electric (and don't worry, I did know to deduct the previous bills reading!). I'm massively in credit on both so I'll let the huge (for me) bill go this month and see what my useage is next month. Thanks for everyone's help

You need to check that you didn't give the kWh reading for the gas, it should be the m3 reading. If you submit the kWh reading you'll get a bill around 11x what it should be, and if you leave this go on, it'll be more difficult to put right.
