You must return the item, last year I had to buy new washing machine and received delivery on the Friday they were collecting old machine following week but also had another new washing machine and I told the delivery driver it was an error please take it back I only paid for one machine not two I would not dream of keeping it that would be theft.0

I had a similar issue with a rug from Wayfair - I let them know and they arranged for UPS to collect, UPS wouldn’t give me a time slot shorter than a whole day or the option of dropping off so I gave up and sold it on ebay - way too much hassle to return it and Wayfair did not seem interested0

I think when businesses are struggling even the big ones then I'd ask them to come and collect it. Courier company probably had to shell out for the loss and probably took that off the self employed courier. Always the little guy that loses out. I'd ask them to come and collect it though - don't see why you should have to do any more than put out for the driver.1

Be honest
ask them to collect, but ask for some compensation for inconvenience and having to store it.0 -
You have a legal responsibility to tell them you’ve received it, and request that they can collect it at their own cost from you. There’s a good chance they’ll say you can keep it as the cost to them of collecting it could probably be more than the item is actually worth. If you want to stay on the right side of the law, then let them know.0

Keeping it is stealing!
Contact them and tell them what has happened, chances are they will just let you keep it, but do the right thing - if they want it back, let them collect it, if it's not high value they'll just write it off.

You need to start with who is the legal owner of the saw horse? the courier may have paid an insurance claim for loss and it may now legally be theirs, just like an insurance company if they write your car off you can but it back from them, once they have paid out the car belongs to them just like this saw horse may legally belong to the courier so even if the sender says keep it it may not be their goods to say this. It will take a lot of time and effort to work out who is the rightful legal owner. I personally would sell the goods and donate the money to charity, I would not have profited then and would be able to sleep easy.0

Pedant alert - it's could have, not could of.1 -
You shouldn't return it yourself because that would be non-essential travel and visit to a shop during the coronavirus crisis, but you should email them and let them collect it at their convenience.0

Plain and simple contact the store or contact on line, explain whats happened. Its then their problem how to get it back if they want it back. Otherwise you are stealing it.Misstakes do happen, people and machines do make misstakes,do the right thing.
