Wifi calling using Whatsapp
Hi.
Probably a stupid question. I have a holiday booked for France this year 2021 post Brexit (covid permitting). I have a mobile phone with a UK plan. When I'm abroad, I intend to use wifi to make calls to the UK using WhatsApp on my phone. So on that, does anyone see any charges creeping into a whatsapp wifi call to the UK when I'm abroad?
Help is appreciated.

if you have a UK data plan then NO2

A WhatsApp call over wi-fi does not involve any use of, or charges from, your mobile service provider.Evolution, not revolution2

Just on a side note.
if you are in a country that doesn’t include inclusive roaming in your plan then be careful.
example.
was in Barbados and on a Wi-fi call from hotel...walked out of lobby and therefore outside of Wi-fi area and phone switched to cell call and therefore started charging for call..only because we had a cap on spend did we realise what was going on...£75 pounds later

For now ... until they get around to removing the UK from the EU roaming agreements. 🙄ballyblack said:if you have a UK data plan then NOJenni x0 -
The phone would switch to using mobile data for the WhatsApp call. It can’t switch from a WhatsApp call to a ‘cell call’dazzaofdagenham said:Just on a side note.

Sometimes it's possible to pick up wifi calling from your network when abroad even though it generally isn't available outside your home network. You may or may not get charged for a roaming call, but if the call does switch from wifi to cellular then you would be paying for it if not part of inclusive minutes.PHK said:

What you state is correct .. but not for WhatsApp calls. They are always performed using a data connection.chistery said:

If you're referring to @dazzaofdagenham then their comment/example was irrelevant - the thread topic is about WhatsApp calls. You quoted @PHK's post, who most certainly did mention WhatsApp. 🙄Jenni x1

For WhatsApp calls always make sure what your data roaming is off when in a chargeable location..
You can put your phone on flight mode and turn on the Wi-Fi you don't need incoming texts/calls.3
