There was no criticism, all I asked was since you didn't mention it in the initial post if you're reading the meters or not.  Not reading them regularly is almost always why this sort of situation occurs.  If you want help and advice unfortunately sometimes you have to hear things you don't like to hear, but that didn't include anything in my post.

Have you looked at the comparison websites to see if you can do better elsewhere?

Thanks for your response. I thought I had explained that the failure of my pc and mobile meant I only missed 1 meter reading.  It's proving to be a setback to my attempts to switch at the moment.
I am concerned that UP is still only collecting the £23 by DD and I can't be sure what their figures for annual consumption are, as they are for Sapphire for 18 months, not my last year's consumption. Sapphire is what they have put me on  and I'm now facing  an even higher level of tariffs as shown by the Cheap Energy Club. These have jumped to £71-80+ from the £65 I have been used to as a single, low-level user.  I feel trapped - any advice would be much appreciated.

Utility Point seem to take the first six months of your direct debit at their higher rate and then the next six months at the lower rate. If you have only just completed one year with them then I would expect the next direct debit to be at the higher rate. It is totally normal to be in debt to your energy company at this time of year and not something to be worried about. In fact you should probably be thankful that you are in debt to them rather than in credit - people are having real problems getting their money back from Utility Point at the moment.

@Neil_Jones I think your previous post(s) were a touch "offish". @sevenonine asked how to pay the current outstanding debt of £67.42 which had built up as a consequence of UP not taking the "Winter" DD amount.
Unless you are familiar with UP's account systems you can't advise on that point!
@sevenonine also asked for some information about fixed tariffs and "varying" DD amounts, the best you could do was to say use the comparison sites and say that as long as you owe less than £500 you can switch, and go onto state the obvious about variable tariffs. Not exactly what was being asked! The OP was quite clear IMHO.
@Gerry1 did try and answer the questions.
@sevenonine Hopefully someone who is a Utility Point customer and knows how to easily pay that amount via your account can offer advice. The system may have just been having a temporary glitch.

Often googling a term produces appropriate answer https://www.utilitypoint.co.uk/payment-choices/

Really? >:) The payment choices page is no doubt the one the OP was having problems with, so that's no help whatsoever. A detailed explanation from someone who is a customer and familiar with all the "My Account" ins and outs is needed if it's still playing up. And I did see your comment with the email address, no need to google! but it's hardly a direct payment option!!
  • I rang UP and for once was able to speak to someone. I had clicked on the link for renewal and told the advisor their direct debit amounts had been the minimum for 9 months so I had a debit of £64.72 to clear.  She gave me details of their account and said I had been transferred to their Sapphire account, being at the yearend of supply.
She then said she would advise me to take their cheaper tariff: Ruby.  She was very reasonable and offered to sign me on to Ruby whose tariff was £52; I said I'd prefer to pay £60 to which course she agreed (I thought it best to agree) and I have been sent the contract giving me 14 days to change my mind.
I really want to know whether other customers of UP have been getting their sizeable credit amounts refunded.
