Council Tax when moving within same Local Authority

Options
We have exchanged contracts and have a completion date in mid February. We are moving within the same local authority however going from a property that’s Band C to Band F. We pay the council tax by direct debit so would usually expect to pay in 10 instalments with February and March clear of any council tax costs. Given that we will be having 2 months in a higher band property, will we pay the full price for Feb and March, or will it be an adjusted price?

  • You'll pay the difference between Band C and Band F per month x 2.

When we did something similar, I worked out the daily amount of Council Tax due.  To keep the numbers simple, in your case 300 days @ (total Band C for year/365) and 65 days @ (total Band F for year/365).  Add them together then take away how much you have already paid over your 10 month DD.  The difference is what you owe.  Our council was perfectly happy with this and yes, I did provide my workings!

Using my example, say Band C is £1200 per year, Band F is £1500 per year.  So the calculation is 300 x 1200/365 = 986.30 plus 65 x 1500/365 = 267.12 which comes to 1253.42.  If you have already paid the full £1200 by DD, you owe the council £53.42.  HTH

I don't think they will adjust your payment, council tax is linked to the property not to you personally. For me they generated a new bill for the other property which had to be sorted separately and then adjusted the bill for the existing property with any reabte etc.

Worth also checking your neighbours' bands. I have twice appealed my banding as being incorrect as it was above my identical neighbour. I think it was a recent extension that caused the increase, but I argued lots of other neighbours had identical extensions and all in the lower banding.  I won my case both times, following the MSE guides.
