By Miles Car insurance
Options
Since July last year, I have been working from home due to covid, my car have been sat in driveway except to supermarket once a week, I haven't thought about car insurance (wouldn't have mess it around with cancellation/NCB etc), but in April I am due for renewal, base on previous year, I estimate renewal to be around £320-£400, I will obviously price compare 3 weeks before.
I have notice there is a pay as you drive by Miles car insurance. The website estimate it around £170 fixed plus 3p per miles, this mean unless I do 5000miles, i will be better off.
To me, It feel like a no brainer, even when things go back to normal, my annual mileage will be around 4500. Last year I have done 1200 miles
So my question is 1)anyone have any bad experience with the company 'by miles'?
2) is there ANY reason I should go for 'traditional' car insurance compare to this style??
3) is there anything different with the way this company 'by miles' car insurance works???
4) any other opinion???
Thanks

You might have 'Driver other car policy' whereas by miles doesn't provide ????0

Have you spoken to your insurer about a refund for lower miles this year? Direct Line were offering it.0

You'll probably have to have a GPS tracker fixed to your car to determine how many miles you drive.0

I am using this company's services. It works for me because my situation is the same as yours. In this way, my expenses for car insurance is lower.

Just for the sake of it I ran a By Miles quote for someone with similar circumstances to my own. Her base price, without any purchased miles, was more than I pay for proper insurance. It seems to be geared towards younger people and higher risk drivers. Someone like you, whose normal policy quote comes in about as cheap as car insurance can be, is unlikely to benefit. Plus there's all the extra faff.0

The obvious risk is if your mileage is massively higher than you anticipate and so the per mile aspect takes it above the price of what you'd have otherwise paid... most people would "forget" to tell a traditional insurer that the mileage has gone up and so would get away with the stated fixed mileage estimate.
There has been some noises from people saying their renewal quotes have increased massively with speculation that its because they arent getting the anticipated 3p/mile but a) pure speculation and b) you should always shop around each year anyway0 -

Was the same for me, more expensive with 0 miles driven. I'm mid 50s, loads of no claims, "normal" car. Agreed, certainly not for the likes of me.
