Do insurance companies use police databases?

Hi all,
If you report an attempted car theft/window break to the police can this report be used by the insurance companies in the future?
My car window was smashed today. Instinctively I called the police and it was logged as damage/theft as a few pound coins were stolen. Now, after getting a few quotes, I want don't want to go through my insurance as the high excess and implications for the future mean it will be cheaper not to do so.
My policy states that theft/damage needs to be reported to them within 24 hours and I have heard that you should tell them as they check police databases at renewal time.
If I tell them, but don't claim I'll still need to declare 'losses' in the future, but I don't tell them and they see the police report, my insurance could be invalid.
Please help!

Inform them and know you have valid insurance and following your policy terms or decide that you want to commit fraud and if caught you will pay massive premiums for the rest of your life (car, home etc not just car insurance).
Insurers have access to a wide range of databases like CUE and MIAFTR
If the only damage is to glass... nothing taken from inside, no major damage to bodywork etc then it will go under the window section of your policy rather than theft section and have absolute minimal impact if you claim or not (normally)0 -
I had a minor scrape (third party fault) on a road, logged as a no claim, information only, with the insurer, case open and closed the same day, insurance renewal is lower than last year. Peace of mind and no extra cost = win win0
