you may think London / SE prices are "high", but the fact remains a £1M purchase down here is still well beyond "ordinary" people. So yes, "attacking" the couple for their "greed" in wanting to avoid contributing money to society, not the Govt's desire to retain some semblance of a tax income to fund it, is "reasonable"

The article says they're buying for a million quid in Woking. Well, obvs, that's "London-SE", so a million quid really won't get you very far, will it...?

Let's look at a few comparables, shall we?
    Oh.
These places are all on RM currently, a mill or within negotiation, and all within three miles of Woking:

It gets you a LOT more than just a vanilla 2-bed flat...

There was at least the revenue comment about dealing with exceptional conditions. And, who are you to decide the worth of any input to the forum? :/

The thread was about HMRC (government) dealing fairly with cases arising exception out of Covid 19, but many have liked to attack the couple instead for abilty to buy a £1 million dwelling without knowledge of how come by, or London-SE prices. I can understand, however, a certain lack of sympathy for them.

A lot of the comments have been about the fact they claim they can't get married. They weren't forced to cancel their wedding in September, they were just forced to restrict the numbers. A lot of people continued with the ceremony but cut the numbers (including two weddings I was supposed to go to in August and October). Weddings weren't banned until November for one month and then again in January. They had September, October and also had most of December and plenty of time to give notice again. The November lockdown came with an end date that the government stuck to. If they had rescheduled their wedding for December 5th and lockdown was extended I'd have more sympathy.

I've done plenty of whinging over how crap the last year has been (I loath working from home especially being stuck in a basement bedroom in a house share for the first two lockdowns, haven't seen my family in a nearly a year, spent christmas alone because new restrictions cancelled my main plan and 2 back up plans) but I completely understand why we need the restrictions and I didn't go to the national press. I still have a job, roof over my head and have remained Covid free so everything else I've been annoyed about are first world problems. They've gone public with an issue that could have been resolved. Allowing large gatherings would have been reckless last year. They could have easily done the legal bit.

With regards to comments on their house price, if it was £30k on top of a £200k house that two average wage workers were buying it would be eyewatering, £30k on top of a £1m purchase is very different. If it cannot be resolved, I'm sure they'll get by with a property that costs £970k, even in London.

But it's not really exceptional, as many commenters have said it is as a result of them choosing not to get married.

On the way to and from work I walked past weddings daily during the summer and they all looked happy....

Would have saved them 30k - seems worth it to me. If they'd done it Monday-Wednesday they could even have grabbed themselves a half price wedding breakfast on RIshi.
