Theft and accesses

Hi all,
'You must report thefts, arson or malicious damage to the police and give us the crime reference number within 24 hours.'
In a policy document, does this refer to theft OF the vehicle or theft FROM the vehicle?
If a car side window is smashed and something worthless is stolen from the car, does the excess come under fire/theft or the smaller general excess?
TIA

Well, it's certainly theft, and it's also malicious damage, so you need to report it.
Since what was stolen is worthless, the excess is irrelevant.

I'd say the damage is part of the theft and not a separate matter.

If it's been reported to the police, does it need to be reported to the insurers?
'If you make a claim for fire and/or theft a £150 excess will apply.'
Is damage to/theft from the vehicle classed as theft? Trying to work out whether the excess will be £150 or the lower £60.

I'd say it's covered by the windscreen and glass section.

Maybe but the window was smashed in order to enter the car, the op may be best just to stick with the damage.

What did the police record the crime as, theft from your vehicle?

The insurance may never contact the police, but it's best to be honest if you involve them.

In all likelihood it's recorded as theft so speak to the insurance company if you want to claim.
  • Excesses:
    £115 windscreen
    £150 fire and theft
    £60 other
So, if I was just claiming for the side window but the damage was caused by a theft, which one does it come under?
    They've filed it as damage.
  • I'm being quoted for the glass as £170 but I'm trying to work out if it's worth it depending on the excess and the fact that, maybe foolishly, I reported it to the police.

Well if you're sure it's been recorded as criminal damage then if other covers glass it will be £60. If all glass claims are windscreen claims then it's £115.

We can't see your policy so maybe read that.
