New Build Extras

Me and my partner have signed up for a new build property that is due to be ready in June/July time. We are yet to exchange missives on the advice of our solicitor, which we agree is the wisest move, but because of that we have been told we need to pay a 50% deposit for any extras we want such as carpets/tiles etc this week so they can order them in (if we had signed the missives already this could have been added to our final balance).

We are have been told that if something goes wrong with the house sale we would lose this money, so my question is would it be worth putting the extras on a credit cast and paying it straight back rather than a debit card for the extra protection that might offer? Or would that not help under these particular circumstances? We are looking at having to pay around £6k today so it’s not an insignificant amount of money.

    A credit card, if they accept them, simply replicates your rights against the merchant to the card issuer... it doesnt give you any additional rights.

    You therefore could only claim off the credit card if there is a breach of contract but you could equally claim that against the merchant themselves. Where it comes into its own is where merchants are overseas (so complex to claim) or insolvent (and so unable to pay). 

    If you decide to pull out of the purchase the deposit wouldnt for some reason suddenly become recoverable from the credit card company.
