Travel Insurance Claim (Medical) -

Going by the original thread above. Is it not standard procedure for the hospital to deal with the insurer direct for medical fees covered by travel insurance ?Rather than the patient paying upfront and having to claim reimbursement ?

Will depend on the insurer and the policy, many cheap policies may require pay and reclaim for smaller amounts at least.NoodleDoodleMan said:Going by the original thread above. Is it not standard procedure for the hospital to deal with the insurer direct for medical fees covered by travel insurance ?Rather than the patient paying upfront and having to claim reimbursement ?2 -
Thanks - my only knowledge is based on somebody I knew who needed an emergency routine abroad - they were covered by one of the big insurance firms who dealt with the hospital administration people direct.

It is certainly more prevalent with budget policies but it depends on who all the actors are in the claim... the hospital ultimately must also be comfortable with the patient leaving on the promise that an overseas insurer is going to be settling the bill. It can be the case that an insurer has emailed authorisation for treatment etc but the hospital doesnt want the risk of non-payment so makes the patient pay before allowing them to be discharged.NottinghamKnight said:

MrNoodle, you may need to ring the insurance company before you go somewhere to ensure they cover the place you are being taken/nearest etc.Policies differ. It's important to have that info and their phone number to hand at all times plus your policy name and number. Goodness knows what happens if you're unconcious, hopefully they'll forgive but I keep mine on me at all times. You should also have the original copy of the insurance doc with you on holiday. I used to carry a copy until I found this out.

It’s not NoodleDoodleMan (Mr Noodle!) that need to know or taken action.
This is the second thread the OP has started, asked questions yet not bothered to return to. Shall we agree to give up?0 -

I always take a copy of our insurance policy document with us. I also keep a hard copy note of all emergency telephone numbers and relevant essential information etc. in an A5 "life support" clear pocket binder.Same duplicate information sent to my email address, and stored there electronically in a dedicated folder for convenient access when/if needed.

Ooops sorry about that. I was thinking of something else when I posted, a common covid lockdown moment these days.
