Ditch the car altogether, minicab for the weekly shop, hire a car for the infrequent longer journey?
I've known a few people ditch their car altogether. All lived in London and never used their cars during the week and hired one for the weekend/holidays if required. One joined local 'car club' for a monthly cost and could then book a car as required. Sounded good in theory but weekends apparently got booked up far ahead, although during the weeks it worked well - except they didn't often want a car during the week, so they gave it up. Might be worth investigating though. They've recently bought an EV but the others have stuck it out - one of them for the past 20 years or so.2 -

Yes, because you said "I don't do many miles. I drive weekly to the supermarket which is less than a mile away and the odd longer journey every 2-3 months."ushjr said:TimSynths said:Taxis. .Erm, that doesn't make sense!Comments above

What is it that is going to need doing for the MOT?
What will that cost?
Can you get any of the work done cheaper by your own maintenance, or planned ahead of the MOT?
If it is simply consumables that need doing, but a lot of items coincided, then it is probably worth doing. If it is welding or something more serious, more consideration is required.
Sometimes it is "better-the-devil-you-know". We have a 1997 Fiesta and everything done to that car is more than the car is worth, but we know the true value (not cost) of the car and the fact it is faultlessly reliable and simple, so for us the work is worth it.1 -
Your situation is exactly what millennials use the likes of Uber and Zipcar for.
One year of road tax, MOT and insurance can pay for quite a few one mile Ubers6 -
So how much does your car cost you a year (all costs). Once you know that you can start making decisions.
How much are the repairs to pass the MOT? That will also help with your decision.1 -
What car? What's wrong? What's it cost to mot?"The Holy Writ of Gloucester Rugby Club demands: first, that the forwards shall win the ball; second, that the forwards shall keep the ball; and third, the backs shall buy the beer." - Doug Ibbotson0
