What about iD mobile as an alternative? They offer the same 3-2-1 tariff as three, using the same network. Reading the terms and conditions for any minimum usage only suggests:
It will automatically disconnect after 4 months of no chargeable Service, Top-Up or Bundle purchase and you will not be refunded for any remaining Top-Up credit.
that is mentioned in 2 other places again, but basically making a "chargeable event" every 4 months will keep it active. The only other relevant clause I found was:
12.4 Unless an additional Top-Up has been made, any unused Credit will expire after a period of 365 days from the date of purchase and unused allowances will expire as specified and this is non-refundable.
Which suggest that as long as you top up once a year, you won't lose any credit.
Seems like a decent deal, £6 for the cheapest sim to get started.
I can't add links as it says my 10 year forum membership isn't long enough to earn that privilege.

I think you have to have made a specific number of posts to be able to add links.
It has nothing to do with your years of membership. :)

Looked at the iD site and saw this in two folloing paragraphs which seems to contradict itself. Can anyone enlighten me?
"when you choose a Pay As You Go SIM card either, and with iD Mobile you're free to top up as little or as much as you want, whenever you want.
Hardly use your device? Just add £10 to your SIM every two months. Find yourself in need of more data one week?"
I'm well ticked off with 3. I expected a small raise in prices to come but this is crazy. And just at a time when changing your number with doctors, dentists, vaccinators, family, shops et al is really difficult. Or is that the reason they are doing it now. Older people with low usage will be desperate to hold on to what they have. Or am I cynical?
The coverage maps I've looked at have no key, bundles, rocket packs, golden goodie bags...........it needs to be made a whole lot clearer so people can make comparisons.

I can't see the PAYG option on their website, it just brings up this page https://www.idmobile.co.uk/shop/plans/pay-as-you-go/sim-only where they appear to only sell bundles.
    Am I missing something?

There is a conflict of information on the net for iD
**Under SIM Only on their site "Hardly use your device? Just add £10 to your SIM every two months" on the site
but I've seen the '£10 every 4mts' in my searches. Need confirmation of where we've seen this
Because if we're looking at £5 a month then something like Tescos at a little more is much more stable and simple to deal with than pfaffing around with an unknown.

Take your old number with you to a new network. This is easier than it used to be as just need to send a text.

Text 'PAC DDMMYY' to 65075, where DDMMYY is your date, month and year of birth. You should get your PAC sent back straightaway with a notification of your current balance.

So does this text go to my new provider or the old one? And then what happens? Perhaps I should just get the young lad at Tescos (my mentor) to sort it. :)

You get the PAC code from your existing provider by texting with your old sim in the phone and then pass it on to your new provider when you've got your new sim card. With O2 you can complete a form online at www.o2.co.uk/move or call 2202. You will also need to provide your old number, which you want porting over, the original phone number attached to the new sim card and its identification number, which is printed on the sim and the packaging SSN:*************. Do this after you've setup your account with the new provider.
