Just to be clear we haven't pestered anyone!  I just think that not passing on requested information for nearly four months is appalling.  We have since found out from our sellers that she, their solicitor, does not even have a printer at home so cannot print or scan things.
A printer costs under £50 so why hasn't she got one?

Probably because the firm she works for is unwilling to stump up!

Well we still haven't exchanged, the sellers solicitor is still holding things up!  On Friday she was waiting for a report that was in the post so yesterday our solicitor asked what report and had it arrived to get this   'our typist is currently dealing with a backlog and i cannot confirm when the report on my clients related will be sent.'
Does anyone know what a report on clients related means???
So worried our buyer will pull out.

Have you formally complained to the firm yet? That will get things going.

Could be a word missing. '...when the report on my clients related purchase will be sent'
In other words, your sellers' solicitor is saying she cannot say when her 'Client Report' on your sellers' related purchase will be sent out. My solicitor sent us a very detailed Client Report on our prospective purchase, once she had received LA searches, title info, etc and responses to her initial enquiries.

    Badger09 is correct.
Your seller has an onward purchase transaction which is not as far advanced as yours.  The solicitor acting for your seller has dictated the Client Report on the property, which the typist hasn't typed up.  Therefore the report hasn't yet been sent to your seller.  You will not be exchanging until your seller has received the Client Report, read all the contents and signed and returned the various documents, which will include the contract and mortgage deed.  Until the seller's solicitor receives these signed documents back, they will not be in a position to exchange and set a completion date.

thanks badger09 the point is that when we spoke to the sellers they had had a full survey of the empty property they are buying, using most of our purchase money, no mortgage several weeks ago and signed and returned the contracts on 12th Jan after looking at the searches and they were hoping to exchange last week with completion today or sooner.  They had no idea what this report is and were not expecting it.

So sorry knightstyle, I understand your frustration.  My solicitor wrote to me after five weeks to say he'd had zero contact from my vendor's solicitor.  I contacted the estate agent to chase it,  it took two weeks for the vendor to find out that her solicitor had tested positive, and her file hadn't been opened.  She has been assigned a new solicitor now, but we have lost seven weeks due to their lack of communication.  Good luck.
Any number of issues can cause delays. You'll never know what's happening elsewhere in the chain. People are more often or not two faced. Easy to blame a faceless solicitor when put on the spot.
Also easy these days to leave reviews for solicitors online and reduce the risk of them displaying a cavalier attitude towards their clients. Thankfully.
Which makes them worthless. In my personal experience those that complain the loudest are normally the least informed.

Except that's not entirely true is it?
If there's a large number of negative reviews that all have a similar theme in common, it's likely to highlight a systemic problem with the item or organisation.
For example, if I Google "Landmark Mortgages", there's a substantial amount of negative reviews that highlight the same issues regarding their business practices.
So does that mean mortgage prisoners are 'the least informed'?
    No, it doesn't.
If I Google the name of my conveyancer, there's pages of negative reviews that highlight the very issue we're having.
I wish I'd taken the time to read them before signing up with them.
