Dodgy goods

Morning all. I'm having a problem with a rug I've ordered online. The website looks as its a UK based company with .co.uk but after seeing reviews a few days after paying it says they are based in China. My problem is the reviews on trustpilot were all negative and saying it's a scam, poor quality and not as described.
Being as it is coming from China and not the UK rather then risk it I emailed the selling to cancel my order before they dispatched it to save them on postage so nobody loses out. They messaged me back saying it's a sale item therefore they have a no refund policy. Checking on their website every single item they sell is on sale so there for nothing could be returned. They are also saying it's a custom made rug so it can't be cancelled. I never ordered a custom made rug only what selection of rugs and sizes were on there website and in stock. In terms of buying expensive things (£222 for the rug) I always pay through PayPal and from UK sellers. In this case I was fooled by the seller. I'm wondering what my options are!, is it worth me refusing the order on arrival as I gave the sender plenty of notice not to send it out. Or sign for the item check the quality and if it is poor like everyone is saying try and go through PayPal? My problem is people have said if they want a refund they have to send the rug back, sending a rug 300cm x 200cm by recorded mail half way cross the world is going to be very costly as the company refuse to pay the fees to send the item back. Can anyone give me advice on the best course of action. Any advice would be great. Thanks in advance.

Unfortunately if the seller is in China you effectively have no consumer rights.
You would be covered under whatever laws they have in China but it would be very difficult to enforce.
You might want to check with Paypal whether they'd cover an INR claim on a parcel that is refused, that said by their terns they should find in your favour.

Yeah it's a tricky one, another gentlemen in a similar situation as me said his mum ordered from rugshow.co.uk and the item was shocking and the company refused her a refund. She Didn't win her PayPal dispute as she had signed for her item, this chap had already ordered from rugshow.co.uk but saw what they delivered his mum so contacted the company to cancel and was met with the same response I was, no refunds. He refused to sign for the rug when it arrived and won the dispute on PayPal. This is probably the route I'm going to have to go myself. It just seems crazy companies get away with this and people getting ripped off. Thanks for messaging back.0

Just because it says .co.uk doesnt mean the company is UK based.
Check the "about us" or "contact us" details. Does it have a UK address or UK phone number?
Which website is it?
Looks like you are now subjected to Chinese law, so potentially no right to cancel and will have to pay to return if it is not right.
Hopefully it won't arrive so you can claim for item not received.Should've = Should HAVE (not 'of')
Would've = Would HAVE (not 'of')
No, I am not perfect, but yes I do judge people on their use of basic English language. If you didn't know the above, then learn it! (If English is your second language, then you are forgiven!)0 -
Thanks pink shoes for the English lesson, the fact you could understand the message in question I don't think you need to bring up a few mistakes here and there. As a person with dyslexia I think I do ok and get my message across. I will thank you for taking the time to actually message about the problem in hand though. I've contacted PayPal (via phone call not typed anything out, don't want to confuse people now with the would have and should have as I'm being judged by you)
You are also right it's wrong for me to assume as the company in question has .co.uk at the end to be from the UK. I'll remember that in the future.0 -
Firstly, keep all comms from them confirming the tracking details etc to ensure any dispute with paypal looks at the correct tracking code.
Refuse delivery, the item should then be returned to the vendor. You can then dispute with PayPal and have a reasonable prospect of success but its not guaranteed.1 -
Thanks sandtree, as I've been pretty lucky in my life and never really had this issue before it's the first time trying to claim my money back.
The conversation I had on the phone to the lady from PayPal suggested me refusing the item would result as being marked on their tracking as returned to sender and I would win my case. Let's hope that's how it goes down anyway🤞0 -

Would certainly serve consumers well and support UK businesses. In the game of chess you can never let your adversary see your pieces1 -

As a person with dyslexia I think I do ok and get my message across.I'm pretty certain pinkshoes was not being critical of your use of english. The comment about "Should've = should have (not should of)" is a permanent part of her forum signature and is aimed at those ignorant posters who for some bizarre reason think that the word "of" has the same meaning as "have" - it obviously drives her mad just as it drives me mad.Unfortunately, those people who mis-use english through ignorance (or deliberately) can make other posters less tolerant of people like yourself who may have genuine difficulty with conditions like dyslexia.I understood your post OK and I'm sure pinkshoes did too.Sorry I can't advise about the rug though.*I assume pinkshoes is a she!

I'm not really to bothered on someone calling me out on a few mistakes here and there. Is my English and grammar perfect, no of course it's not, I know that and as I've already explained I'm dyslexic.
But when that person says they are judging me I'm gonna take some offence to that as I'm sure most people would. I've only come on here today to get some advice not to be judged on my spelling. For future reference I'll try and go over my comments before I send them out. I guess I can't be too much of a hypocrite I get annoyed by people who use bought and brought incorrectly.0 -

If there was a post on here written by someone who had won a Nobel prize for literature and was grammatically perfect in every way possible and Pinkshoes replied to it, their signature comment would still be shown on that reply.5
