Smart Meter: Please Help

Hi,
Moved into new property in March, 4 bed detached that is quite modern and generally energy efficient. The electricity meter was broken when we moved in and so we basically had to agree to a monthly set cost based on estimates, this was £170 for both gas and electricity (which we felt was high). There are 3 of us in the house and my partner and I both work from home and have done for months now, so I have taken into account the fact that this would push up consumption in the house, particularly in months when the heating is on. It took months due to Covid disruption but eventually we got a smart meter installed. The smart meter has been installed 2 days now just seems to giving us some bonkers readings. It is just after 9am at the time of writing this and it's telling us we've used just over £3 in gas and electric but almost nothing has been on apart from intermittent blasts of the heating in 3 rooms when the temperature drops. Yesterday the meter told us we used almost £4 in gas but again, the heating was only on in 3 rooms and not all day. Based on the last 48 hours we are looking at monthly costs of well over £200 per month for electricity and gas. Something appears to be very wrong. Would appreciate any advice on how to remedy this....
Thank you

It can take some suppliers time to send the tariffs to your smart meter. If you look at the menu in the IHD you can see what has been set. I have the Chameleon IHD 6 and the tariff is accessed via a subpage entitled 'Account'. The IHD should also allow you to see your meter readings. It is a simple mathematical exercise to calculate your daily cost.

It is also worth checking that your meter is sending data. Go to N3rgy.com and you just need your MPAN and IHD MAC (it should be on the case or in one of the menus) to see if the DCC is receiving your data.

The Smarts  would have a meter reading when installed as 00000.0  - what are they now ?

So here is our account summary based on the estimated billing they were using pre smart meter. But we have no way of verifying electricity consumption as the meter was broken. Also, the ratio of gas to electricity cost has gone from around 20/80 to 55/45. I know that we are using heating now and not during those months but still seems a big jump

I am not sure that previous estimated billing is relevant. What tariff is showing in your IHD. This information comes directly from the smart meter. The smart meter records your actual usage which it then translates into cost. For example, my electricity unit cost is 14.62p/kWh with a DSC of 25p/day. This is showing in the IHD. I have used under 1kWh so my total cost so far today is 30p. If the smart meter has been set up properly with the correct tariffs then the costs that you are seeing on the IHD should be accurate.

If everything has been set up properly, then you need to look carefully at your usage and check that you are on the cheapest tariffs.

@DanM1701  The important aspect at the moment is the consumption in kWh's - not £'s . As others have said the finance side might not be set up. What the Smart sends back and to your IHD is the meter readings.

    What are they now ?

Forget the history - once you have got a history for the next few months with accurate data you will be able to pursue your dispute but for now its those meter readings

  • Thanks all for replies.
So here are the reading from the IHD attached

  • Also, by the time we got up the daily charge was at £2.89 already
  • So the tariff is 18.21p per kwh plus daily standing charge of 23.64p. The meter reading for electricity since installed, according to the the IDH is 32.55 and the meter is the same. The gas meter however isn't showing any readings whatsoever...

32.55 kWh in 3 days is very average (for this time of year) and costs about £5
Is thee no display on the gas whatsoever - it may need waking up - is there a black button or button A ?  Does the meter have a small key pad - press button 9

  • Gas reading on the IHD for just under 72hr period is a whopping 168kWh
