Just checked and all radiators in the house  have TRVs if they are the things that allow you change the radiator from off to 5.

I’ve spoken to my plumber friend today who said that the kitchen needs an extra radiator  based on the size and his estimates.

    Yes - these are TRVs.

They roughly relate to 3 = 20oC, 4 will be higher (around 22oC?) etc.

When the room temp is approached - eg 20oC for one set at 3 - then the valve gently shuts off the flow. As the room cools again, the valve gently opens. As long as the boiler is providing hot water, the TRV will control the heat in that room.

TRVs should be set and not* left fully open - unless you like such a high temp in every room. Bedrooms would normally be good at around '2', for example. It's usually just wasteful to have them all open full.

Anyhoo, your plumber seems to be on the case :-)

*The exception being the ones in the 'stat' room.

As far as cheap and easy things go, put some insulating curtains or blinds at the door and windows.
