Gatser said:Thanks for the feedback. I was asking because I was made aware of a local coffee shop that is using contactless transactions but not revealing the amount at time of charging. I am considering "having words" with them if they are breaking the law.
Personally, I only pay if an amount is shown, check my app asap and only use an account with £100 max balance in it.0 -

I use two shops which have this Square reader - they both swivel their monitors towards the customer to look at before the transaction is done.

Of course TFL tube contactless doesn't tell you the amount - it doesn't know until the end of your day's journeys anyway. Off topic, I was a bit surprised to get an email from TFL today reminding that my card was about to expire, they seem to know everything about you when you tap in and out...

When you tap your card for the first time it will check against the backend and do an arbitrary authorisation against your card (like 0p or 10p) to check it is live. The card from that point forward is essentially a token to enable you to tap in and out to register your presence and the computer backend does all of the calculation based upon how you have travelled overnight will submit a charge to the bank for the final amount which debits your account.

I must admit, too often I don't look. I tap my card and assume/trust that the vendor had been honest/not made a mistake. I know I've never had a problem though, as I do record all my spending and check my statements carefully each month!0
