Contactless card payments

Is it a legal requirement that the contactless terminal shows transaction amount? I am aware that some retailers do not do this!

Name the retailers?  As when I’ve done a contactless payment it shows the amount that’s going to be charged and only changes when I tap it on the terminal to show it’s processing.
Time is a path from the past to the future and back again. The present is the crossroads of both.
  • I think the OP might have seen the programme on ITV regarding how fast we are heading to a cashless society.
The reporter set up a contactless card system (well he didn't actually plug it in to anything)at an outdoor market in Manchester  to see how many would pay by card without seeing the amount - 12 out of 13 did - none that I saw asked how much the transaction was for!
So is it a legal requirement - I don't know, but I always ask for a receipt anyway.

No payment amount = No way is my card going any where near terminal.
As there is no dispute rights on a amount that is wrong when you use contactless or you PIN. That is you authorising what ever amount is taken.

I know that in, for example, some museums in London you can tap you card the 'give £5'

There is no amount shown on the terminal as such, just the notice saying £5
  • Our local park has a community coffee thing, for Christmas day they were giving away coffee but did ask for a donation, if you waved your card at it, it charged £5 but it was one of those readers connected to a phone or similar so didn't have an amount. As it happened I used the phone pay which did tell me the amount

With Barclays the amount taken usually shows up immediately when I check their app before leaving the store.

12 out of 12 in fact as the other person paid by cash!

Not quite the same thing - requires the transaction is online (most are now) and you have a data connection but importantly the transaction has already been authorised by you

Thanks for the feedback.  I was asking because I was made aware of a local coffee shop that is using contactless transactions but not revealing the amount at time of charging.  I am considering "having words" with them if they are breaking the law.
Personally, I only pay if an amount is shown, check my app asap and only use an account with £100 max balance in it.
