American Airlines 'Travel Credit?'

Options
Hi All - so we are booked on American Airlines flight to Costa Rica this Easter 3rd Apr - 17th Apr. But I have a growing suspicion that is isn't going to be likely that we can go due to covid.
I have researched their website, and the way I am reading this, the day you cancel, you will be issued travel credit that lasts 1 year from issue? Does anybody have anybody experience as to whether it's 1 year from your initial booking, or 1 year from the date that you cancel?

Many thanks

It should be a year from the date the voucher is issued, so neither of the options you suggest. If the flight is via the US, which it must be, I very much doubt you would be allowed to board and American have reduced flying accordingly. If the flight is cancelled you are entitled to a full refund, not a voucher

Log onto your AA booking online with your 6 digit identifier.
If you're fortunate, it will come up with something along the lines of

    "Your flight changed".

With so many AA flights cancelled, there is a strong possibility that one of your flight legs will have disappered and your itinerary is no longer valid.  If thats the case, drop them a line and ask for a full refund - if they offer travel vouchers, refuse them  and insist on the refund.

If its helpful to anyone, on I contacted AA on 14th  Jan when I found amendments on my mid-Feb trip to the States.
It was a selection of flights booked with AAdvantage miles plus relevant taxes - no hassle, no aggravation and no problems with getting a refund.  The miles were returned to my account within an hour and the money refunded to my cedit card within 48hours.
The agent on the phone couldn't have been more obliging and American Airlines did the right thing without any prompting.10/10

As a related aside, Avis refunded the monet straight back to my card after cancelling my booking online with them.
