The smell of creosote is, I agree, unpleasant. When I used it years ago the smell stayed in my nose for a while and clothes needed double washing. But, as a child, extra pocket money for doing the fences was extra pocket money.

When we use treated wood today for fence posts and rails we put a coat or two of 'recycled sump oil' on. It's brilliant, we even do the fences and sheds with it, we add about 2% or 3% white spirit if it's a bit thick. And of course it's money saving expert free..._

My darling Dad used to paint my back fence with a mixture of creosote and old sump oil. Would stink for a good while after and had the advantage of putting off the local scallys in the alley behind from getting near the fence.
When they stopped selling creosote to the public we went onto Creocote which was similar but thinner.
The fence has been up since 1995 and the panels are still going strong.
You must be careful with that sump oil, it's carcenogenic.
Just remembered, we stored some of our stuff in my brother's shed when we had building work done. Our Christmas tree took about 4 years before it finally lost the niff of creosote when we got it out of the loft each year.
