Return a ring to jeweller

  • You arguably get a better deal buying second-hand jewellery than you do buying new stuff...

I did address the questions earlier. I know that it’s second hand as I have since seen a post on Instagram to confirm.

I appreciate diamonds can be rehoused though it appears this one hasn’t.

It was not advertised as second hand. Another jeweller about 2 mins away labels theirs. I had previously looked in their shop and clearly noticed second hand stock. As it was not labelled as such in this shop I didn’t think it would be.

I paid over £1000 in cash.

My gripe is that it’s not been made clear it’s second hand. I thought I’d paid for a brand new one, until I looked on Instagram.

Am I able to return if I thought it was brand new and it wasn’t labelled as not? It’s not like I can tell - like you could with a car perhaps.

Instagram?  What retailer is it?  How was it advertised, as a new item or not mentioned at all?

At the time I asked you to answer the questions, you hadn't answered any of these questions that had already been asked:
You didn't say you knew how it was second hand.
You didn't say if it was sold as second hand or new.
You didn't say if it was a high street chain or independent - and still haven't.
You still haven't answered these questions:

    • So are you looking at the diamond with a 10 x loupe or with the naked eye?
    • Are you looking at the diamond in a much better light than in the jewellers?
    • Was it a high street chain or an independent jeweller?
    • How did you choose this shop to buy from?
    • Do you know the colour, carat and clarity of the diamond you bought?
    • How much did you pay? (You've sort-of answered this question in your reply where you say you did address the questions earlier)

So if your gripe is that it wasn't explained to you that it was second hand are you now happy with the clarity (i.e. inclusions/imperfections) in the diamond which was the other issue you outlined in your initial post?

As mentioned previously, buying second hand jewellery can give you more bang for your buck.
I lost my first engagement ring many years ago and the insurance money bought a bigger, better quality diamond 2nd hand than I could have bought new.
Read the pros and cons of new versus 2nd hand jewellery here:

I wouldn't have been happy to buy a ring that I was led to believe was new, but we don't know what the shop was like, we don't know what was said or not said - either by you or the seller.

This is beginning to sound like possible buyer's remorse.
Does your fiancee even like the ring?

Why did the imperfection make you think it was 2nd hand?
If it's the ring that your fiancee likes then does it matter that it's 2nd hand?
Or is it a case she doesn't like the ring or worse said no?

What does that even mean?  How can a post on Instagram confirm it's secondhand?

As I (and others) have already said, you often get much better value from secondhand jewellery than you do buying it new.  Think about it.  Unlike cars and most other items you buy and use, diamonds don't depreciate in value* and don't wear out or break down.  They may even rise in value.  You wouldn't not buy a house because you weren't the first owner, would you?  (Wow - three negatives there - think it still makes sense... )

The girlfriend doesn't like it 'cos it's not new - is that it?

*Most "new" jewellery probably does depreciate immediately because of the massive mark-up high street jewellers have on new items.  Go secondhand.

Maybe the shop has an insta and posted something like 'some of our new stock from a house clearance' or something on there which referenced it being second hand? This would be most likely if its a smaller independent jewellery store as opposed to Pandora for example, and in small independent shops I would never assume things were new unless explicitly stated, but then second hand vs new wouldnt make a difference to me if i liked an item.

Though why I am answering questions to the OP, who knows, but they dont seem to be capable or interested in doing so...

A 2nd hand diamond ring will be more valuable than a similar new one as not only will there will be no vat on it, it will be priced to sell at a much lower price than it would have cost when new. Personally I always prefer to buy jewellery 2nd hand as I know it offers far better value for money. My own engagement ring was bought 2nd hand.
The bigger the bargain, the better I feel.

I should mention that there's only one of me, don't confuse me with others of the same name.
