New GHIC card?
Comments

in this country last year
What country is that?0 -
I've just looked on the NHS link regarding applying for a GHIC. If you are a UK national, living in the UK, and not in possession of a valid EHIC card you should be able to apply. Do you fit those requirements and if so what happens when you try to apply?

General_Grant said:Martin has just finished his Thursday night ITV programme and in that said you could apply now. I've tried but because I'm a UK citizen who was living in this country last year the system tells me it cannot see that I am eligible and therefore I cannot proceed to apply. Why is Martin continuing to say you can apply when actually it is not possible if you are living in this country and are a citizen of the UK?Westin said:General_Grant said:Martin has just finished his Thursday night ITV programme and in that said you could apply now. Are you a UK resident?
The earlier problem was that, on searching for GHIC, the link was to the EHIC area (and given that it also said they had not updated the website completely and were still referring to EHIC I didn't think it completely wrong). So because I had been resident in the UK not France or elsewhere in the EU and am a UK citizen, I couldn't have an EHIC - but there was no link to the GHIC application area to which it should have re-directed.0 -
Just ordered mine to replace an expired EHIC - very straightforward, web site worked perfectly.0

The government link is now working. Ordered new GHIC cards for me and my partner last night. Received an ‘Application received’ email confirmation immediately 👍0

No reason it shouldn't work as its the existing EHIC website.0

My EHIC expires on January 15th, so I now need to apply for the new GHIC, even though we can’t go anywhere yet!!
The main difference is that unlike a GHIC card they also work in Iceland, Norway, Switzerland and Leichenstien.
GHIC and current valid UK EHIC cards without a hologram and "CRA" marking as mines below are only valid in EU countries only.0 -

My mother - an Irish citizen - applied for her replacement EHIC in early January online, got an email back asking her to email them a copy of her passport and still hasn't received her card six weeks on. Shouldn't be hard to trace her as she has lived at the same UK address for 45 years - and her NHS number was quoted in the application - so not clear what the delay is!
Of course dual UK/Irish nationals like me (and other dual EU/UK nationals) who were born in GB (e.g. they have an Irish/EU citizen parent) are not eligible for the EHIC EU card as they are deemed as UK citizens under the withdrawal deal. Not a major issue at present unless you are visiting Iceland, Norway or Switzerland as they can of course get the GHIC card - but the EHIC lasts for life in theory whereas the UK government could withdraw the GHIC in future.
That problem doesn't arise for UK nationals born and resident in Northern Ireland which technically remains in the single market - they can still get the EHIC.

Our EHIC expires March 2022 a week before we are due to go to Tenerife. On applying for the new card we are advised that they cannot confirm if we qualify, I am 70yrs old my wife 67yrs old, both born and bred in the UK. They require copies of utility bills to confirm our status, we have lived in the same property for 32yrs. Another Brexit benefit?0
