Problems opening an account - possible inconsistency in address or elector roll

Options
Hi all
I have tried to set up several accounts in the last few months and each one isn't going through. This isn't because it's being declined but because they are unable to verify me. I have put in what I believe to be my correct addresses, but I'm not completely sure as have moved around quite a lot and can't remember when I was registered where. I moved house in August last year and registered on the elctor roll there soon after, and I received confirmation that I would be registered there from 1 December 2020. I am currently trying to buy a flat and am worried that my creit rating will be affected by these accounts which aren't being opened. I tried to check my credit report with the Money Saving Expert credit club and had the same problem - they're not able to verify my identity. I'm tearing my hair out at all of this and don't knwo how to solve it. I guess some advice on the following would be useful if anyone knows:
1) what causes these identity checks to fail - am I right in thinking it's where I've been registered with banks and where I've been on electorol roll?
2) if the answer to the above question is yes, is there a way of checking my address history as maybe I'm getting it wrong?
3) is there a chance that because I have only been on the electorol roll at my current address since 1st December this hasn't been updated yet?
4) will these identity checks (and failures) affect my credit rating etc?
5) any other advice on this very frustrating situation?
Thank you so much in advance!

  • My husband is currently experiencing the same problem, we have tried contacting Experian to no avail.   We do not have any debts, yet a mortgage in principle has been declined and the lender is saying it is something to do with an adverse credit card (but we can't access the file to see whether there is any fraudulent activity).  We had to re apply for the mortgage for the property did not complete on time....  Very frustrating and may loss the property   Did you get yours resolved - if so how?

There are 3 main CRAs - Experian as well as Equifax and Call Credit/TransUnion (or whatever they are now) so check all 3 files

You can request your statutory report from the CRA or use the free service - MSE Credit Club for Experian / ClearScore for Equifax / Credit Karma (formally Noddle) for Call Credit - the latter approach would probably be quicker

When you have moved from house to house have you used the Royal Mail redirection service? This is often used as a source of tracking address changes.
it is quite likely that updates to the electoral roll are delayed.
Maybe look at applying for your credit report by post if you can't get through identity checking online - it will require manual work at the CRA end which might get past the 'computer says no' issue.

  • Thank you - it is really strange and it has only occurred in the last 3 months. We moved 3 1/2 years.  We will keep emailing and trying to locate a phone number
  • I mean it literally took me 10 seconds to find their contact details via google and going on their site. Experian's number is 0800 013 8888 open 8:30-4:30 Mon-Fri

  • Could be CIFAS marker as well, I ended up with one when I forgot an entry from my address history and sometimes now fail ID checks - do a Subject Access Request with CIFAS to see if anything was recorded against you:
