Hi!

I booked a holiday via teletext holidays on 29/11/20 due to travel 21/12/20 under the condition of anything was to change with coronavirus I would be given a refund.

At 00:01 on 21/12/20 the Portuguese government restricted all travel for non Portuguese nationals..
Teletext rang me the night before to tell me it’s fine go to the airport everything will be fine.
we travelled to the airport costing us another £60 only to be refused boarding by Ryanair.

Teletext are refusing any sort of refund due to the flight being active.. even thought it would of been illegal for me to travel!

my bank are refusing a chargeback for the service as again the flight was fulfilled.

I’m currently £950 out of pocket, wasn’t allowed to spend Christmas with the family and to make matters worse I’ve now lost my job and can’t get any of this money back :(

    Claim on your travel insurance.
  • You are a bit vague on the terms and conditions you booked under.  Check these carefully to see if FCO (or whatever it’s called now) advice is included.  Also check your insurance policy although unless you specifically sought insurance to cover you for FCO advice I doubt you will have it.

You were being somewhat optimistic booking in November with the knowledge things can change daily on the travel front all over the world.  Good luck though.

Have you lodged a complaint with Teletext?

Did you not question their advice when they called you?

Presumably you bought travel insurance that offered disruption due to Covid?   Should be a simple travel insurance claim based on a change to travel and entry restrictions for your trip.

I think the £60 travel to the airport is on you, you really should have known that the Portuguese authorities would outrank Teletext on the question of who is allowed into the country!

Travel insurance is the route for recovery of the flights costs.
Depending from where in the country you were travelling from, by the 21/12/2020, travel from some areas was not permitted under the Tier rules.  That is no practical helps, but may give you another angle with the travel insurance.

Sorry to hear you also lost your job.  Have you contacted the Job Centre Plus to claim nJSA and / or assessed whether you are eligible for any benefits?  Even if you are not eligible for benefits, nJSA can provide some limited support for up to 6 months depending upon your NI contributions record.

    Good luck.
  • Thanks for your reply.

The agent who sold the holiday said that if anything was to change due to covid we would be given a refund.
ive tried to log a complaint for mis selling but it’s like talking to a brick wall.

Optimism is the only thing we can have in these circumstances.
