    Just change it.
    Modern polymers are of such low quality that they simply disintegrate after a few years, whether you use them or not. (Just try picking up a "rubber covered" remote control that is more than 2 years old, or take a look at what happens to plastic windowframes & drainpipes)

    VW reckon it will definitely last for 5 years, you might get upto double that if you feel lucky and VW have been ultra cautious, but you will either be inspecting it every few weeks, or feeling anxious every trip that it might break.
    I want to go back to The Olden Days, when every single thing that I can think of was better.....

    (except air quality and Medical Science ;))
