Phone screen repair, lockdown etc

I took my phone in for repair on the 13th December. I was told it would be complete in 24hrs.
Called the following day to hear that the screen they put on it was faulty and they'd ordered a new one ASAP which should arrive in the next few days.
Inevitably this went on and on and on with them not being able to source a new phone screen. I spoke with them on the 17th December and they absolutely assured me I would have my phone repaired by Christmas.
Then we went into Tier 4. They said they were still open up to the 23rd December but then closed until the 4th. Guess what, still no screen turned up.
I called back today which was their first day opening... no screen.
Now we're in Tier 5 and it looks like that will be in place until the end of February. So without a phone for almost 3 months.
I understand it's not their fault that lockdowns have occurred etc but I'm getting increasingly worried that my phone has been forgotten, lost, stolen or something. Who knows. They said they can't give it back to me because it's in pieces as the screen I had repaired was smashed so it's not like they can put that back on.
I was thinking maybe I could ask them to courier it to me, but if they're not working presumably they won't be able to do that? And then I have a broken phone in my possession, but that's not particularly helpful.
Getting to the stage I'm considering just going for an early upgrade (I was intending to keep this phone another 18 months at least to save a bit of money) and then I can demand they fix the screen when they can at a later date and resell it.

Being pedantic, there is no such thing as Tier 5.
Alert levels have nothing to do with tiering and are used to quantify the the impact on the NHS.1 -
My local repair shop has stayed open as "essential" service

Just because they can remain open doesn't mean they will stay open.1

Annoyingly they haven't posted anything saying whether they're open or not. So frustrating. I feel like they've got my phone held hostage.0

Rather than upgrade your current phone, do you think you could get a cheap unlocked phone temporarily until yours is repaired?
It might be worth speaking to your network operator about a replacement SIM.
A dream is not reality, but who's to say which is which?1 -

I've used SmartFoneStore a couple of times for used iPhones.
