Balance transfers HALIFAX to MBNA

I will be looking to transfer a balance from my HALIFAX CC to my MBNA CC in July. However, I read somewhere that they are both owned by Lloyds and was wondering if because of this I will not be able to do balance transfers between the two?

  • I have done Lloyds to Halifax previously but was a few years ago.
Ask MBNA and depending on the answer prepare to apply for a card outside the Lloyds banking group.

Do you have a crystal ball that says they will be any offers then?
As usually any balance transfers have to be made within 90 days of opening the account.

True, but not always a good deal unless they have offers on them.

My credit cards always have current offers for balance transfers and in the past I've made use of them when I've needed to.
  • You'll need to ask MBNA; they're both brands of Lloyds Banking Group so I wouldn't expect them to offer promotional rates for this kind of transfer.

Yes both Halifax & MBNA are in the Lloyds group but I think I read somewhere that they still operate as separate providers so a BT between the two should be possible. Best to check with them though and do come back and let us know the outcome as it will help others.

Okay - I've just come off the phone with MBNA and I can indeed do a balance transfer from my HALIFAX cc to my MBNA cc
Also I have two balance transfer offers available to as an existing MBNA customer.

Does it have to be MBNA?
You could go for the new Barclaycard offer and get £20 bonus (instead of you paying a fee) for transferring your balance to them. On condition that you're transferring at least £2500.

I have an empty Barclaycard and the plan is to move the MBNA balance to Barclaycard then move the HALIFAX balance to MBNA. My main dilemma is when to do it? My existing offers end in June/July this year and I'm not sure whether to wait until then and hope the current balance transfer offers are available at that time, or to do all the transfers now even though I will be losing 6 months under the existing deals.
