When adding an item to the basket it shows me an estimated delivery date, I couldn't see an item that offered a delivery upgrade to test. 

If the date was given as an estimate then as long as the goods were shipped with a next day service I would say that, assuming the required information was provided,  you having to bear the return costs is fair and they are entitled to refund the item price and base postage, so minus the delivery upgrade. 

Advice to keep both is probably best and you could ask the seller if they'd refund the extra charge seeing as the parcel was late. It is a tricky one as this would be good customer service but at the same time with the way the couriers are at peak with the current situation on top such delays should be expected. 

If the delivery date was guaranteed and there's no mention of what that means (for example Royal Mail Special Delivery is guarantee but that doesn't mean it will arrive 100% of the time but that they will refund the postage if it's late) then you might be able to argue they are in breach of the contract.
