Dishwasher always asking for salt

I have a built in dishwasher and every time after using it, it and for salt. I'm pretty sure that I shouldn't be putting salt in after each wash. The place I put the salt in is full of water. Does this sound correct?

Have you actually filled it up with dishwasher salt?

Yes, the area that contains the salt will be full of water but you still need to fill it up all the way.

Modern dishwasher tablets don't need separate salt and rinse aid unless you areinan extremely hard water area

You fill up the salt container with salt, all the way to the top, yes water will pour out as you do this. If the light is still on after this there is a fault. You either get it fixed or you live with it, just check the salt level visually every few weeks and top up when necessary.

We are lucky enough to live in a soft water area and have never used salt.
I used to be indecisive but now I am not sure.

If you are using tablets which means you don't have to add salt you can usually turn the salt light off

As others have said, you need to fill the salt container up fully and the water will spill out into the bottom of the machine while you do it.  Your machine instructions might tell you how much it takes - ours is 1kg of salt.  The bags I buy are 3kg so it's easy to feel when it's roughly enough (although you can also tell by no more fitting in!).

Yes I have filled it up until the water starts pouring out. Then after the wash is complete, it asks for more salt
